BAILEY ISLAND CEMETERY - (Baily Island) Harpswell, Cumberland Co., Maine: Surname A-L USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material. Transcribed and submitted by Karen Ray Cook's Corner intersection, State Rt. 24 south 13.5 miles to the cemetery, right side of road. From THE BRUNSWICK RECORD, Brunswick, ME., June 17, 1965, article by Dale S. Davis: "Until 1809 Bailey people were buried mostly on nearby Orr's Island or across Merriconeag Sound on Harpswell." That year the 18 year old son of David Johnson drowned off the island. David buried him near his home, "diagonally across the present Route 24 and invited his friends to use adjacent land in a similar manner, thus establishing the cemetery. Later the Merriman, Stover, and Orr families gave additional lots for the same purpose. At the time they made one interesting stipulation: only natives could be buried there. They defined a native as one whose grandfather had been born on Bailey." The Willing Helpers, a group of devout women, assumed care of the cemetery in 1913 & still maintain it's care. A plaque in the cemetery reads: The Land for this Cemetery - a gift from the heirs of Lemuel H. Stover, Paul C. Merriman and James L. Orr. In loving memory of the Past. Dedicated to the use of Bailey Island Citizens A.D. 1927 I walked & transcribed this cemetery summer 1999. It is in good condition & maintained well. Names & dates were transcribed mid 1970's. Copy on file with Harpswell Historical Society, was used to compare with my transcription. Differences were noted and headstones recheck-ed before compiling the following. Headstones are listed alphabetically by surname, than first name on stone. Other names on stone are cross-indexed to that stone. Names and/or data taken from previous transcript is noted as [Hist. Soc]. If both name & data are noted [Hist. Soc] I did not see headstone in cemetery. Parenthsis ( ) indicate, date not on stone. Square brackets [ ] indicate, data added by compiler. Diagonals /// indicate, illegible. Spaces in epitaph indicate, end of line as cut on the headstone. Marker- denotes a military or organi-zational symbol. No name is abbreviated unless that is how it appears on the headstone.
