CRANBERRY HORN CEMETERY - Harpswell, Cumberland Co., Maine - Located in Cundy's Harbor on Sebascodegan Island (aka Great Island) CRANBERRY HORN CEMETERY M - Z ----------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material. Transcribed and submitted by Karen Ray ----------------------------------------------------- From Cook's Corner intersection, State Rt 24 south 4 miles; left on Cundy's Harbor Rd one & one-half miles to cemetery, located on both sides of road. Island Meeting House, built abt 1765, use to stand next to the oldest section of the cemetery. It was architecturally copied from the First Parish Church of (West) Harpswell, built 1757-1759, (which still stands). The Island Meeting House was torn down 1843 when the East Harpswell Baptist Church was built, about a block from the cemetery, by the Freewill Baptists. Restoration of this church by the Sebascodegen Island Garden Club is almost complete. The two newer sections of the cemetery-right side of road-were started by donations of land from the Aubens family & Rudolf Younger. These sections were first called both Hillside Cemetery & Sunset Cemetery. In the mid 1960's the local Cemetery Assoc. voted to use the name Cranberry Horn for the entire cemetery. I walked & transcribed this cemetery Apr-May 1999. Like other cemeteries this old, some stones are broken, worn, illegible, or completely gone. Names & dates had been transcribed 1964 by Mrs. Carl L.A. Schmidt & others. A copy of this transcription (Pejepscot Hist. Soc., Brunswick, ME) was used to help decipher headstones now illegible, or missing. Headstones are listed alphabetically by surname, than the first name shown on the stone. Other names on the stone are cross-indexed to that headstone. Data taken from the Historical Society transcript is so noted. Parenthsis ( ) indicate date not on stone. Square brackets [ ] indicate, added by compiler. Diagonals /// indicate illegible. Spaces in epitaphs indicate end of the line as cut on the headstone. "Marker", denotes a military or organizational symbol. Usual abbreviated terms are used; including Imo for In memory of. No names are abbreviated unless that is how it appears on the headstone.
