OLD HARPSWELL COMMON BURYING GROUND (a.k.a. Transcribed and submitted by Karen Ray In Brunswick, from intersection of State Rts 123 & 24, Rt 123 south to Harpswell. Cemetery is 5.5 miles on the right, behind the First Parish Church. The First Parish Church was built 1757-1759. It was restored with moneys earned during the town of Harpswell Bicentennial 1958, plus some town funds. Now, the church is a National Historic Landmark, maintained by the Harpswell Historical Society. Some of the stones in this cemetery have been restored by the Harpswell Garden Club. Other stones are broken, worn, illegible, or completely gone. Footstones found broken or vandalised, & scattered in the cemetery, have been placed behind the Meeting House. These are listed at the end of transcript per surname initial. This cemetery had been transcribed mid - 1970's. Copy on file with Harpswell Historical Society was used to compare with my transcript. Differences were noted & headstones rechecked before compiling the following list. Headstones are listed alphabetically by surname, than first name on stone. Other names on stone are cross-indexed to that headstone. Names and/or data taken from previous trans-cript is noted as [Hist. Soc.]. Square brackets [ ] indicate, added by compiler. Diagonals ///indicate, illegible. Spaces in epitaph indicate, end of line as cut on the headstone. "Marker-" denotes a military or organizational symbol. No name is abbreviated unless that is how it appears on the headstone. Some stones have the monument company name & location and/or stonecutter shown on the bottom of the stone. This is shown on the list as [stonecutter-]. Tombstone art or symbolism is shown on the list as [stone-]. There are 5 curb lots, 1 corner post lot and 1 fenced lot in this cemetery. The graves in these lots are so noted. ALEXANDER ANNA Mrs Imo who bid adieu to time Sep 22, 1809 AEt 73 She was forty three years a professor of the holy religion of Jesus Christ.
