Ten miles W. of Portland. On Port. & Rochester, and Port, & Ogdensburg Railroads. First settled in 1736. Originally called Narragansett, No. 7; afterwards Gorhamtown, in honor of Capt. John Gorham, and incorporated in 1764. The township was granted to the soldiers who served in King Philip's war in 1728. Population-1850, 3088; 1860, 3253; 1870, 3351; 1880, 3233. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 754; Estates, $1,122,704; 1870-Polls, 774; Estates, $1,445,968; 1880-Polls, 756; Estates, $1,398,524. Parker's Corners, South Gorham, a village in south part of town, to which mail may be directed.
