Sixteen miles N. of Portland. On Maine Central Railroad. Granted by general court 1735, and called New Boston, because of proprietors residing in Boston. Settled about 1750. Fort and church built 1755. Nearly destroyed in French war. Revived, 1762. Congregational church formed, 1774, and Rev. Samuel Nash ordained. Incorporated the 39th town June 19, 1778, and named in honor of Thomas Gray, one of the proprietors. Population-1850, 1788; 1860, 1768; 1870, 1738; 1880, 1798.
