Twenty-two miles N. of Portland. On Maine-Central and Grand Trunk Railroad. Granted by general court in 1735, to inhabitants of Gloucester, Mass., from which it derived its name. Town surveyed, 1737. Settled about 1743. Rev. S. Foxcroft, settled first pastor, 1754. Incorporated in 1774. Was half shire town with Portland, and the courts sat here from 1791 until the organization of Oxford county, 1805, when they returned to Portland. Population-1850, 1848; 1860, 1654; 1870, 1496; 1880,1382. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 404; Estates, $665,946; 1870-Polls, 407; Estates, $848,905; 1880-Polls, 427; Estates, $819,575.
