Fourteen miles N. of Portland. On G. T. R. and M. C. R. R. Granted to Joseph Phippon and others in 1680, and extended from the sea, five miles on each bank of Westecustigo (Royall's river), seven and one half miles. Waste land between this grant and Falmouth, also New Damariscove Island added, and the whole territory named North Yarmouth, Sept 22,1680. Settlement broken up by Indians in 1688, and renewed, 1721-22. Rev. Ammi R. Cutter settled first pastor, 1730. Freeport set off and inc. 1789; Harpswell set off, 1750; Cumberland, 1821; Yarmouth, 1849. Population-1850, 1121; 1860, 1076; 1870, 910; 1880, 827.
