He settled on a large farm adjoining land of his brothers Winslow & James. Here in engaged not only in general farming, but held a contract to furnish wood for both the Atlantic & ST Lawrence and the Androscoggin & Kennebec Railroads. In 1855 he established a brick yard and for many years did a large business in this field. In later years he leased the yard to other brick makers and devoted his energies to farming. Leonard Hicks was a public spirted citizen. In 1866 he was chosed one of the delegates to visit the Maine Legislature to oppose the annexation of Danville to Auburn & gave generouly of both his time & money in the cause. He was a charter member of Danville Jct Grange and gave the lot of Land where the Danville Union Church now (1990) stands. After the annextion of Danville to Auburn although he was an uncompromising Democrat, he was elected to the Auburn Common Council of 1875 * 1876 representing Ward Five.
