He rceived a good elementary education and took up the study of medicine with Dr Barker of Stroudwater (ME) and Dr A R Mitchell of North Yarmouth (ME) since there were no medical schools at the time he reived a diploma from his preceptors. He located in practice in Pejepscot (ME) in 1810, the secound physician to reside in the town. AT first he apparently lived at the public house of Squire Giddinge, his family remaining at North Yarmouth (ME). His location here was evidently experimental, the doctor determining whether the vicinity would provide him with sufficient income to support his family. After one year he moved his family here in 1811. Dr Banks remained in Danville (ME) for 20 years, and developed a large practice in the area. At times he taught school, serving in the first school District in 1818, 1811, and 1819. He also prepared legal documents, became a competent, surveyor of land and made himself generally helpful to his towns people whether in sickness or health. The doctor's competence & populatity led him into the field of civic affairs. He served as Moderatior at many town meeting, was both Seletman and Clerk in 1816, 1817, & 1818. He was appointed a Justice of the Peace in 1817 under the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and by Maine appointments, continued that service during his entire residence here. For six years, also he was a member of Danville School Committee 1824-25, and 1826- 29. DR Banks wrote the first history of Danville preparing an historical sketch in 1820 for Hon William D Williamson, the noted Maine historian. This document was found among his papers by his grandson, Dr Charles Edward Banks, a prominent member of the Maine Historical Society. Soon after the organization of the Maine Medical Society Dr Banks was admitted as a member. THe family removed to Portland in 1830, where the doctor continued in practice until his death.
