OOn 16 May 1864, while carring supplies to pickets on a guard line was wounded severly in the leg. The leg was so severe that it became necessary to amputate the leg above the knee. After the war he left farming and in 1870 he purchased the livery stable business of James Jordan. He served as Vice president of the Burside Post GAR of Auburn, which he was a charter member.
