He moved into Danville (ME) shortly after his first marriage and occupied the farm lately owned by Leander Mosher. He was a prosperous farmer and a man of eminent natural ability, qualities which recommended him for the important part he played in the municipal affairs of Danville & Auburn. He was agent for his Danville school district in 1845, was selectman of Danville in 1857 and 1858 and 73  in the latter year was elected as a Repulican to the Maine Legislature of that year. During the contest of annexation of the Town of Danville to Auburn he took prominent part, favoring annexation. The joining of the two towns becoming an accomplished fact in 1867. Mr Field was again elected the Legislaturer of 1868. Upon the organization of the City of Auburn (ME) he was chosen to Ward four Alderman. He became a member of Cumberland Lodge of Masons At New Gloucester, and was subsequently elected Chaplain of the LOdge serving until his family moved to Califorina. Both he and his 2nd wife were charter members of Danville Jct Grange. He taught school in 4th Danville District (1809) and aslo served as a sarqeant in the Militia. He moved to Hartland Me in 1815, he worked as a carpenter and was employed in Bangor ME. In Hartland ME he was the first Captain of the local Militia Co. He was a delagete to the Maine Constitutional Convention (1819) and later served in the Maine House 1820. He settled about 1793, clearing a farm "one of the most active & public spirited early settlers of the Pejepscot Claim. Major Thomas m 7 Sep 1777 at Gloucester, Ma, Mary Dresser b 23 Dec 1755 d 12 Oct 1812. Thomas Finson's mother d 3 Nov 1803 at Pejepscot, Me. Thomas Jr served in the Colonial militia, and was a private in Capt John Rowe's Co. , Col Ebenezer Bridge's Regiment at the Battle of Bunker Hill. At the close of the Revolution he lived for a time on Martha's Vineyard Island, where he was undoubtedly a fishman. He returned to Gloucester and remained there until his settlement on the Pejepscot Claim. In Pejepscot (Auburn), Thomas Finson was a frequent colaboratee of "Squire" Giddinge in the building of highways and bridges and in the establishment of the first school in the neighborhood. He recognized, as did the the squire the need for concerted community action and was a signer of the petition, 1799, urging the incorporation of the town. AT the first Pejepscot Town meeting in 1802, Maj Finson had the houor of being chosen Moderator. At that meeting he was chosen Highway surveyor, Tythingman, and a member of the special committee to lay out roads. He was the meber of the school committee of 1804 & on the hire preaching committee in 1804-1806. Major was in the militia 1799- _____, served was Capt and later a major. At age about 21 years to Corinth, Penobscot County, Maine. He was a farmer and a successful surveyor and his serves were it great demand. 73  When the Aroostook War threatened, he was called into active service being a private in Captain Nathan Ellis; Company, Corinth Light Infantry. He was on active duty on the frontier from 20 Feb to 22 Apr 1839. He married at Corinth, Susan Stevens. He attended Lewiston Falls Academy and at age 19 was teaching school in Danville's 4th, 3rd, & 10th districts. Later he purchased a general store at Southwest Bend in Durham (ME) with Henry E. operated the store until the outbreak of the civil War. He was a cornet player and in Sep 1861, he enlisted as a musician in the band of the 10th Maine Infantry Regiment. Before enlisting he had played in Chandler's Band of Portland (ME), and one of the outstanding musical organization in the State. Upon the expiration of his enlistment term, he returned to Durham (ME) but reenlisted as was assigned to the 131st US Colored Regiment. Soon promoted Lieut, he became a Capt of a company stationed at Port Hudson, Louisiana. His efficient and conspicous service won him the position of Provost Marshall, and he remained at Port Hudson on guard duty until the close of the war. He was discharged with the rank of Major. Major Fitz returned to Durham (ME) formed an association with Kendall & Whitney Co., of Portland, and for the next 30 years was a commerical traveller for that company. In 1895 he purchased a large farm in Durham (ME) and for 19 years was one of the town's most advanced and prosperous farmers, selling the farm and moving to Lewiston (ME) in 1919. He was an ardent advocate of temperance and was instrumental organizing a Temperance Society in Durham (ME). He was nominated by the Republicans and elected to the Legislature of 1899. Major Fitz married m 30 June 1867, Miss Fannie M Libbey, born at North Yarmouth (ME) d/o Jonathan & Frances ( ) Libbey. Children: FITZ Henry Emerson b 4 Mar 1837 d 30 June 1911 s/o Moses T & Mary (Emerson) Fitz. Henry as a young man sought a quality education, studied at Lewiston Falls Academy. When 16 years was teaching school at the 12th Danville School district (1853) and worked diligently to save money for a more advanced education. After teaching in the 9th District in 1854 and again in the 12th district in 1856 he joined his brother, Andrew, in running a general store ibn Durham (ME). In 1859, he entered Westbrook Seminary and although he was able to study there only three months, he rated a brilliant student. He returned to the genernal store business to earn more money but before to could return to school again the Civil War interrupted his plans. He enlisted first as a private in the Union Army. He attained the rank of Captain and stationed at Port Hudson, Louisiana. After receiving a permanent injury and not fit for active service, re-enlisted as a quartermaster's clerk, and served until the close of the War. For a time he tired cotton raising in Louisianna, but the climate was injurious to his health and he returned North to locate in Portland (ME) where he was appointed inspector in the US Customs service. Thru close acquaintance with Vice President Hannibal Hamlin then United States Senator from Maine, Henry Fitz was appointed bill clerk in United States Senate, serving in this capacity nine consequetive years. He later entered the US Postal service and shortly was employed by the War Department in setting claims in Tennessee, Kentucky, and Indiana. In 1889, he returned to the Postal service and was the first Postal Inspector appointed under the civil Service Act. For the next seven years he travelled into nearly every state in the Union in connection with his duties. In 1896 Henry Fitz resigned from Federal service, located in New York city, where three of his sons had already located, and became an executive of a 73  corporation. Ira went to Danville common schools & Edward Little High School. He later furthered his studies at Eastman Business College at Poughkeepsie, New York, from which he was graduated in 1873. On returning to Auburn (ME) learned the shoemakers trade and for several years worked at this occupation. He entered the last manufacturing business as a junior memeber of the firm of Jepson & Fitz, and in 1881 bought out his partners. He took his brother Amos G Fitz into the firm and incorporated the new firm Fitz Brothers Co. Their earliest factory was located in Railroad Square, Auburn, but business became so successful expansion was necessary, and after 1891 it was moved to Minot Ave, Auburn, occupying a much larger plant. For 20 years the business was controlled by the fitz brothers. In 1911, the brothers sold the business to the United Last Co which for many years contined to operate under the name of Fitz Brothers Last Co. After retiring from business, Mr Fitz was engaged in many community enterprises. He was active in the Auburn YMCA, a director for many years, and served two years on the State YMCA Board. He was active in the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, and was for a time a director of that organization. He served two terms as a trustee for the State Sanatoriums. In the municipal affairs of the city of Auburn serving as Alderman for Ward 2 in 1911- 12 and later on the City Council of Auburn, ME. In fraternal circles he was a long-time member of Androscoggin Lodge of Odd Fellows, a member of Ruth Rebekah Lodge and of the Pejepscot Encampment. He was a member of High Street Congregational Church. Ira Fitz was a lover of horses, and for many years kept driving horses. When ice racing was popular, he participated in the sport, and often owned and drove race horse at the Maine Fair in Lewiston (ME).
