[VR Gray, ME] GOFF James Sr - Born 1760 at St John, New Brunswick, Canada, d ??. While at Boston, MA was seized upon and impressef into the British Navy. In the West Indies he made his escape, returned to New England in 1776, and immediately enlisted in the Continental Army. He was 73 credited with "seven years" honest service. He returned from the service and married at Falmouth about 1785, Anna Stubbs of Falmouth (ME). For a short period of time he appears to have lived in Yarmouth, ME, but soon purchased a large tract of land on the present "Goff Hill" then in the Town of Poland (ME) or Bakerstown Plt. (later Minot inc, 1802). Here he built a home and lived for a time. Later he built a second house on the present "Merrill Hill", now Auburn (ME) and died a year later. Children: Moses Stubbs b 17 Sep 1785 at North Yarmouth, ME; Edward Parker b 25 Jul 1787 at N Yarmouth; Mary b 5 June 1789 at Poland/Auburn, ME; Anna b 21 Aug 1791 at Poland/Auburn; Susanna b 2 Oct 1793; James b 26 Apr 1796 at Poland/Auburn; Marey b 2 Aug 1798; Cyrus b 3 Aug 1800; William b 28 Nov 1803; Delane b 5 Jul 1805. [VR of Minot & Poland, ME] GOFF James JR b in Poland (ME) in the area that became Minot in 1802. His birth date was 26 Apr 1796. He worked on his father's farm until about 1820, when he opened a store in the area now known as Steven's Mills. In 1822, Jacob Hawes Read of Lewiston moved a small building from Lewiston, located it at approximately the present corner of Court and Main Streets in Auburn, with James Goff Jr opened a store. In 1823 Mr Goff bought Read out, and for the next 29 years was in business in Danville and Auburn. He purchased the block of land now bordered by court and Main Street amd Mechanics Row for the sum of $137.00. For the first years of his residence in the area he lived near the store, then in the town of Danville. He later built a home on the present site of Auburn Hall. He later lived over the Line in the Town of Minot, and his brick house was located on the present Lake Street. In 1830 James Goff enlarged his store with a two story building and the upper story was finished into a hall. Among the staple articles which our early stores carried were rum & molasses, a combination almost a necessity to our early settlers. Mr Goff altho a temperance advocate felt compelled to stock both items. While attending the Legislature of 1835, Mr Goff left the management of his store to William R Frye. Mr Frye was a strict temperance man, and objected to selling rum in the store, and Mr Goff gave him permission not to stock it. Never again did the James Goff store deal in the intoxicant. About 1850 Mr Goff gave up the country store business. During his career he had judiciously invester rather extensively in land. at his retirement from business he owned 165 acres on the present Gamage Ave, a farm on Hotel Road, the block of land between Goff Street and the present Beacon Ave, 40 acres strip, 10 acres on South Westerly side of Coury St from Minot Ave to the crest of the present Goff Hill, two houses and five stores on downtown Court St. He developed these properties, Goff, James, Charles, and Cliff St, and Highland & Beacon Aves and also a few others, laid out streets and conducted the most active development Auburn had witnessed as a town up to this time. From these sales and this development he became one of the largest taxpayers and wealthiest men in town. With his reputation for honesty and fair dealing, James Goff became better known and more popular with the citizens of Danville. He was called to jury lists 1828, 1831, 1834. School agent for his district in 1829 & 1832. Elected to the Legislature in 1834 from Danville. He was also a J.P., Postmaster at Goff's Corner for over 15yrs between 1825-1826 & 1835-1849. In 1842 was elected to the Legislature from Minot (ME) and at this session preented andquided thru the House the Act incorporating the Town of 73 AUburn. It was appropriate that the call for the first Auburn town meeting was entrusted to him. Thus within eight years he served 3 terms at the State House, each term representating a different town. He served Auburn some years as town agent 1844-45 & 1847-48. All of these offices James Goff was elected as a Democrat. He was elected the first Treasurer of the Androscoggin County. With the emergence of the Republican party, the new county was carried along with enthuiasm for the new political organization. Altho Mr Goff was the Democratic candidate for County Treasurer in both 1858, & 1859 he failed of election and held no other elective office subsequently. But public office alone did not take up his full attention. As a father of five children he was vitally interested in education. He joined Edward Little as others as an incorporator of Lewiston Falls Academy, and served the Trustees as Vice President from the first organization of the board in 1836 until 1844, when he was suceeded by Rev Allen Greeley of Turner, ME. He contributed liberally to the suppport of the Academy, and all his children studied in its halls. The second term of the Academy's class was held in the hall over his store, the new academy building not having been completed. He served on the building committee. James Goff was a pious man of deep religious convistions. He was a Universalist in creed, and together with Mrs Goff was one of the communicants of that church. In 1838 the Auburn Universalists purchased the lot on which the High Street Methodist Church recently (1950) stood. A building committee was set up with Mr Goff a member and a house of worship was begun and completted on 13 Feb 1839. George Emerson of Danville was one of the builders. To this project Mr & Mrs Goff were large contributors and since organ music was not then available Mr Goff played the violin for services for many yeras. His daughter Julia was a memeber of the choir, and Mrs Goff was active in all church projects by the lady groups. But with all his successes in business and civic affairs, James Goff, had his reverses, too. Curiously enough his most serious disasters befell him within the short space of less than one year. On 20 Dec 1854, Rachel (Brown) Goff, died in Auburn, and he was left without the help mate who had been an active and encouraging partner in his many enterprises. The following years 1855, the "Great Fire" on 17 Aug , destroyed all the buildings on both sides of Court Street from Auburn Hall down to Main Streer, and on Main Street as far as the Maine Hotel. Mr Goff financial loss was estimated at $9000. It consisisted of 6 business buildings and two dwelling houses. Serious though they were, Mr Goff took these reverses in stride, and continued his development plans even up to the time of his death in AUburn 15 Jul 1872. Such were his achievements that as lond as memories of Danville, Minot & Auburn shall endure the names of James & Rachel (Brown) Goff will be honored and revered.
