[see History of Greene, ME] He spent his early life on the farm, and in 1825 purchased the public house in Danville ME at Goff's Corner, which had been established by Jacob Hawes Read and operated by Read for two or three years. This early tavern was small containing not more than four or five rooms for guests. It was a stage stop on the line from Portland ME to Hallowell ME and its capacity for overnight guest was often overcrowded. The owner's son, Elisha III, noted " Once I came down from my famly's quarters to find 42 quest packed into every corner of the house including the kitchen and bar room, the stage having been stalled there because of drifting snow." Mr Keene added to the building - later popular known as the MAINE HOTEL to meet the growing needs of the business. The tavern was operated by the Keene family for 19 years until they sold it to Edward Little, a strict temperance man, who purchased the property for the expressed purpose of closing the bar. Mr Little first installed a man named Shaw as operator & later, Charles Clark, his son-in-law, took over the operation. The business was eventually sold to Joseph E Davis. Upon retiring from the hotel business, Mr Keene was for a time in trade in the village. It was Thomas Littlefield, Auburn's first Mayor who said " Mr Keene was a wide-awake , benevolent man of erratic ways, and overflowing, undounded hospitality. He was a striking figure on horseback and popuplar at musters, barn raisings, social events and at early town meetings. His personality was eminently suited to his vocation of tavern keeper." Mr Keene was never interested in public office, but was one of the original incorporators of the Lewiston Falls Academy (Edward Little High School).
