In early life Robert was a school teacher for 54 terms in Poland, Danville, & Auburn. He held town offices in both Poland & Danville (ME) From 1863 to 1868 he was County commissioner of Androscoggin Co, 1856-1863 was a member of State Board of Agriculture, 1878-1885 73 he custom house inspector at Danville Jct., in 1849 he was elected to the Maine legislature from the town of Poland (ME). While he had not changed his residence for seventy-six years, he lived in two states, two counties, three towns and one city. Mr Martin was a jeffersonian democrat he later joined the republican party almost at the first of that party. When still a democrat the Maine Prohibition ary Law , so called was passed. He often told (Elder?) that while being an ardent friend of temperence yet as a democrat, he was opposed to this law. He advised however, that the democrats should not opposed the passage of the bill in a body. Robert advised a careful counting of noses and as close a shave to its passage as possible. There was a mistake in counting the noses and the bill passed. A committee of Legislaturer visited Gov Hubbard and told him that this bill was passed as a joke. The Gov with a slight exhibition of profanity said " Gentlemen you have passed this bill as a joke and by ******* I'll sign it as a job." The result is known but the credit of the passage of the bill so often ascribed to the democatic party is in reality theirs only as the above shows. It was a good need done through error. Mr Martin often referred to this one of his happiest lapses of judgment and believed that to himself belonged in no slight degree the credit of the Maine prohibitory law. Mr Martin was a member of Tranquil Lodge F & A.M. Robert m 21 Dec 1826 at Minot ME (Auburn) by Rev Elijah Jones, to Asenath Sampson b 5 Aug 1804 at Westbrook ME. According to a "daybook" kept by his son William, John and his brother Andrew arrived in America in 1745. Andrew was lost at sea, leaving young John on his own. In 1749, John was one of the pioneers who helped to clear land for the founding of New Gloucester. That summer, he guard over the oxen in the meadow while the other settlers retutned to North Yarmouth for fear of Indians and flooding conditions. Twelve families moved back to New Gloucester about 1755 and lived in the blockhouse. Among them John Megquire and his wife Sarah Clark Lewis. As protection fron Indians, all lived in the blockhouse for over five years. The first cabins were erected in the 1760's. John Megquire worked lot # 35 owned by Joseph Sargent of Gloucester, Mass. He by 1778 purchased the lot. John paid L10 tax for the erection of a meeting house. In 1778, he and two others protested at a town meeting that the Congregationalists had no right to tax persons or to force them to join the church. He was a staunch (Freewill) Baptist and with the help of the Universalists, helped to organize the first Baptist Church of New Gloucester. He saw service in the Revolutionary war as a fifer from July to September of 1777 in the New Gloucester Co of Capt Nathaniel Merrill.
