His early life was spent in Norridgewock (ME) where he was a farmer. Before 1820 he moved into Danville at Rowe's Corner and spent the remainder of his life here. He was a man of good education and considerable attainment and was much respected for good judgment, and outstanding integrity. THese qualities recommended him to his fellow citizens and he was ofter chosen to Town office. He was Town Clerk of Danville in 1832, 1833, and 1835, was school agent for seventh school district 1835. In 1842 he was elected to represent the Danville District in the Maine Legislature and was one of that large group of men who headed up a temperance movement in the Legislature of that year.
