He was however, serving in a privateer when captured by the British in 1814, and spent about 8 months in a prison at Halifax, NS. He was finally released and arrived home on 2 May 1815 in time to assist in the planting work. Two years later he purchased one half of his father's farm for $286.25, and began to get out the frame for a house for a house which was raised on 15 Apr 1818. Having completed his house, he turned to teaching, and taught in 5th Danville District in 1819. In subsequent years he served many many terms as school Agent for the fifth School District. He also served as Highway surveyor. He was not a regular attendant of any Church, he gave the lot on which in May 1837, the South Danville Methodist Church and aided in the work of the building. He was a man of sound judgement, strictly honest and unpeachable integrity. He followed his father's methodical diariest and his descendants still (1960) have his diaries neatly sewed together. In Jan 1776, he was serving at Portland (ME) and was there disharged, following which he was engaged for some time in privateering, a natural service for an accomplished sailor. In later enlistments his records included participation in the surrender of Burgoyne at Saratoga, the cruel winter at Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth. In later years, contemplating his war service, WIlliam wrote in his diary under date 19 Dec 1836: " I was to the taking of Buroine & his army I went from Saratogue to Valoie Forgue. On March 2 1784, at Falmouth, he married Abigail Jordan, who was born at Cape Elizabeth 4 Feb 1760, the daughter of Thomas & Ann (Simonton) Jordan. She was of the fourth generation from Rev Robert Jordan. In 1788, WIlliam & Abigail (Jordan) Plummer, with their first two children moved onto the Pejepscot Claim (Danville) ME, Here he built a log cabin which for two years sheltered his family, and in which the third child Thomas Jordan Plummer was born. Having constructed a frame house the family moved into the new home, and the cabin was left as a home of his brother Edward and family. For many years, Mr Plummer cleared more and more land for his farming operation and raised ample crops to provide for the needs of his family, and to sell in the market. He was also active in the raising of cattle, sheep and swine. His market was in Portland (ME) and many entries in his diaries describe his journeys to that city by oxcart. In 1817 having reached the age of 61y Mr Plummer sold one half of his farm to his son Thomas J and for the remainder of his life worked only the smaller area, and continued to live in the original fram house, his son building on his half of the farm. William Plummer was a Jeffersonian Democraft and a public Spirted citizen. He was one of the signers of a petition to incorporate the town. Served as field driver 1802, highway surveyor 1803, 1805 & 1807, tythingman 18061807, Hog rieve & fence veiwer in 1807, grandjury list 1809, andselectman 18161817. William apparently having had little formal education, keptfor many years a careful diary. Many of these diaries still are in existence. There are twenty folios of these records kept with the precision of a ship's log, at which , in the course of sea duty, Mr Plummer likely had some experience. They are carefully sewed together the first recording being dated 20 June 1804 and the late 4 Jul 1837. The compiler of the sea family records has been extremely fortunate in having had the opportunity of making a complete transcription of the diaries and they are a valued record of many historical events in the story of early Danville (ME) Children: Anna b 28 Jul 1785 at Cape Elizabeth, Me d 29 Jul 1852 m Capt Ebenezer Woodbury of Westbrook, Me. William was employed in MA, but returned to Danville (ME), took over the management of the home farm which he continued to operate. He was elected a selectman of Danville 18631864. In business affairs he was interested in organization and management of the Danville Mutual Fire Insurance Company and was a director and secretary of the company from 18661917, when he turned his duties over to his son William H Plummer. Both WIlliam Plummer and his son were interested in education matters. He served on the Auburn School Committee for 6 years, 18821888. Altho not a regular church attendant, he was interested in the affairs of the South Auburn Methodist Church, located on a lot that had originally been a part of the ancestral farm. In politics he was a Democrat, having cast his first ballot for FRanklin Pierce for President, and for the remainder of his life, altho not blindly partisan, cast ballots usually for Democratic candidates. He continued active in the work of his farm until past eighty years of age, and until his death took an active interest in its operation. On the occasion of his eightysixth birthday, 1915, the Lewiston Evening Journal said of him:" The name of WIlliam Plummer stands for an honest, upright man, who, in his dealings with others always renders them their just due and expects of them the same. A kind and loving father whose presence is a blessing in the home" William m 31 Dec 1863, at Durham (ME), Eliza B Tenney, who was born Jan 1841 at Raymond (ME) d/o Zachariah & Harriet (Plummer) Tenney.
