Jacob had bought a small house located on the site of the Maine Hotel which had been built about 1818 by Zebina Hunt the ferryman who in 1812 had began the transportation of vehicles and foot passangers across. This project was abandoned with the opening of the toll bridge in 1823. Read remodelled his new building into a tavern , and for the next seven years did a large business. The inn became a point of exchange for the stages from POrtland to Hallowell, and from Danville to Turner and Livermore. In 1829 the tavern was sold to Elisha 73  Keene.
