This project was abandoned with the opening of the toll bridge in 1823. Read remodelled his new building into a tavern , and for the next seven years did a large business. The inn became a point of exchange for the stages from POrtland to Hallowell, and from Danville to Turner and Livermore. In 1829 the tavern was sold to Elisha 7 3 Keene.
