SKINNER Calvin G b 29 Apr 1820 at Danville, ME. d 8 Mar 1897
He attended Lewiston Falls Academy & prepared himself for
teaching and taught several terms in the Danville schools. In
the meantime he carried on a farm with reasonable success.
He started a small store near Rowe's Courner`. He also went
into the retain meat and provision trade on Main St. From Oct
1869 he became a partner in the grocery concern of Peables
and Skinner, in company with James Wesley Peables. After some
years Mr Skinner sold his interest to Frank Chase and
continued in business by himself. In later years poor
investments and inability to collect open accounts brought
him unfortunately closed to the point or deprived his respect
of his fellows. He served as Danville Tax collector in 1852 &
1853 and in both years settled his accounts with the town
before the following annual meeeting - and settled in full.
He was elected selectman in 1854 and served six consequtive
terms. After annexation of Danville to Auburn, he served the
later town as tax collector in 1869 and 1871. He married at

enumeration of people living in New Boston (Gray) which has
come to my (F Nelson or Charles W Munson)) notice is found in
an undated list in the Weymouth Collection at the Maine
Historical Society. It is likely that the enumeration was
made in the late Autumn of 1769 after the season's crops had
been harvested. The document has been named "1769 Census of
(Gray ME). At that time there were 45 land owners, thirty
three houses and four barns. The number of children is
totaled as 98 from 30 families. The only mention of the name
of Small is as follows: Lot 35 in 2nd division. Daniel Small
had a house seven acres cleared, 30 bushels corn, one and a
half loads of hey, One child was born and had seven children
in all. (note: this would indicate that when Daniel Small
and his wife Sarah moved to {Gray} they brought a family of
six children and another had been born in 'New Boston' "[page

a tavern and a stage route stopping place near Danville
Corner. He was one of the signers of the petition to the
General Court in 1799 for the incor. of Pejepscot (DAnville),
ME, He was surveyor of lumber, 1803, Field driver 1804 &
1805, Highway Sureyor 1805, moderator 1806, and Grand Juryman
in 1809. In 1810 was elected selectman served a total of six
terms 1811, 1812, 1813, 1815, & 1818. He was Town Treasurer
in 1822 & 1823. He was also an able militia officer, the
2nd Capt of the Pejepscot Militia Co. He was one of the
earliest Free Masons in the area. Pelatiah was raised a
Master Mason at Cumberland Lodge, New Gloucester, 4 Mar 1811,
and his interest in the lodge won him the office of Junior
Deacon in 1816, Worshipful Master in the lodge in 1817-1820.
The Press of his activities and the rigorous labor of
operating his farm and tavern undermined the Major's health
which began to fail late in 1821, and he continued in poor
health until, 21 May 1823, when despondent of improvement he
hanged himself. Altho Maj Smith was an ardent Jeffersonian
Democrat, and Squire Giddinge an ardent Federalist, they each
had a warm and friendly feeling for theother, not to say a
mutual admiration and respect. On the demise of Major Sith,
Squire Giddinge wrote " A more sudden and unexpected shock
was never before experienced - there was an expression of
sympathy that honor to the feeling of most of the neighbors-
for certainly there was never a demise of anyone so much and
so generally lamented before - for he was a most useful
member of society, and no one in it ever exhibited greater
testimony of public spirit, neighborly kindness or general
benevolence." Thus passed one of Danville's most respected
early settlers. Children: Asa b 12 Aug 1798; John b 16 Jan
