Mr Dewey was born in West Hartford. Conn., in 1830.Bereaved of his father in childhood, he went to Lubec, Me., at the age of nine years to live with his uncle, the Hon. Jeremiah· Fowler, a prominent and thriving merchant of that place. It was in the employ of his uncle that Mr. Dewey laid the foundation of his successful business career. At the age of 19 he was put in charge of a branch office in his uncle’s extensive business. Often the writer has heard Mr. Dewey speak in grateful and admiring terms of his uncle Jerry, who was the father and friend of his youth and whose memory he cherished with all the affection of a son. In 1851 Mr. Dewey was married to Miss Amanda C. Patterson, by whom he had two children, Mrs. Elizabeth H Merrill, who resides in this city, and Capt George W Dewey, who died at sea in 1884. Their mother’s death occurred in 1859. In his early manhood Mr. Dewey acquired a large political influence in Lubec as a staunch Republican. From 1851 to 1856 he was US deputy collector of Passamaquoddy. During those years he was personally active in raising the quota of soldiers from the town of Lubec for service in the Civil war. Resigning his office as deputy collector in 1865, he removed to Portland and became a partner in the shipping business with Jacob S. Winslow, whose sister he married that same year. During a period of 25 years in this business connection Mr. Dewey established for himself a high reputation as a sagacious, honorable and successful merchant, governed in all business relations by a fine sense of commercial honor, and by........ Mr Dewey was a man of warm sympathies and of a characteristically benevolent nature. As a life-long Republican in politics, he was never party bound. Positive in his ideas and convictions and independent in spirit, he was politically influential. yet entirely without ambition for office. His death will be greatly mourned by a host of people in our city and throughout the state, especially in Washington county, where, in his early manhood, he was widely and favorably known. He leaves a wife, two daughters, and three grandchildren, all residents of Portland. The funeral services took place Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at his late residence, No. 6 Eastern Promenade, the Rev. A. H. Wright officiating. Amid the soft radiance of the mid- summer Sunday afternoon his earthly tabernacle was lowered to its quiet resting place in Evergreen Cemetery.
