CUMBERLAND COUNTY, MAINE: 1997 Queries Go to Cumberland Co, Maine USGenWeb Thank you for visiting the Cumberland County GenWeb Site, my name is David Colby Young. I am our host. In the interest of keeping the information that is posted here relevant and manageable, please follow these simple guidelines when posting to CUMBERLAND County: Please enter a query here only if you have roots here. Please enter your query only once. It takes a few days for it to show up. Put the name of the county in capital letters somewhere in the body of your message. To help generate responses capitalize your surnames. Limit the content of your query to just the basic data. This not only helps conserve server space, but will generate more responses for you. People tend to pay more attention to shorter, direct requests. My plan is to keep queries for a period of six months. Depending on the amount of used space, that period of time may change (we are still very much in the experimental stage of this project, but are working on ways to archive older queries). When your query does drop off, you are more than welcome to resubmit it. To search quickly through the information, use your 'finder' function. Send general requests to: NORTHEAST-ROOTS Mailing List. Thank you for your assistance. Please readUSGenWeb's Official Policy on Lookups The USGenWeb Auto-Query Form has been disabled and a new system is being planned. To post a query, please send your query directly to the county coordinator. Tips for creating a good query: Include as much information as possible: In the subject of your message, type: Cumberland County Query If possible, include the full name of the person, with the SURNAME in CAPITAL letters, given name lower case. Known dates of birth, death, marriage, for the person and family members. Most specific location known on this person. Mention county by name. Person's spouse(s).Person's parents. Person's children. Any specific question about this person. 1996 Queries Go to 1997 Queries Go to Queries Posted after Apr 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after May 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after June 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after July 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after Aug 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after Sept 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after Oct 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after Nov 1, 1997 Go to Queries Posted after Dec 1, 1997 NAME INDEXE-MAILCUMBERLAND COUNTY SHORT QUERIES TILTON Sean Furniss Wed Jan 1 08:57:49 1997 I am seeking information about the children (and their families) of Nathan Tilton and Mary Furniss of Scarborough, Cumberland Co., Maine.Related names - Sarah Blake of Kensington, NH, and James McLaughlin of Bangor, ME. In looking at a Placer County California book of "Who's Who", John M Lowell is said to have been in business as a grocer with his brother George. Is there a statewide or county wide survey of Cumberland County? I have no idea whether the Lowells 'started' in Otisfield or just left Maine FROM there... Thanks in advance. GETCHELLFOSSBERRY Gil Varney, Jr.Tue Mar 4 19:50:01 1997 I hope this isn't too long... I recently found an article in NEHGR (July 1909, Family of Samuel Getchell) which links me to this line. My query relates to the Getchells and Berry family. My Getchell link passes from John Getchell (b. Scarboro, 8 May 1757) to daughter Sally, b. 17 Oct 1807, who married Joseph Foss. Their daughter, Sarah Foss, married Franklin Berry of Marshfield, ME c. August 1862; Sarah and Franklin are my 2d-great grandparents. Franklin's father's name was, depending where I find it, Stillman Berry, or George Stillman Berry. In the NEHGR, Sally Getchell has an aunt, Abigail Getchell who married John Berry; Abigail has a brother named George Stillman Getchell. This makes me wonder if perhaps Abigail (Getchell) and John Berry may be parents of George Stillman Berry - perhaps named for his uncle, George Stillman Getchell. So, my query (finally): Who are the parents of George Stillman Berry, born 10 Dec 1841 in Marshfield? Are they Abigail (Getchell) and John Berry? I only know George Stillman (or, just Stillman) Berry's birthdate from the family page in Marshfield town records, listing his children's births, which shows his and his wife's birthdates. Thanks. JONES GAMMON, Cheron Gibson Frazier Wed May 21 07:53:29 1997 Looking for information on the JONES family of Turner, Maine. Following is the information I have: RICHMOND JONES, son of RICHMOND JONES, grandson of HENRY JONES, was born in what is now Turner, Maine, January 7, 1815 in his great-grandfather's house which was on Settlers Lot #77, on Lower Street (Lower Street was lower than Upper, both of which were on a hill). In the winter of 1820-21, Richmond Jones framed and boarded a house on the west bank of the Nezinscot River (this river was the line between the two farms) and finished one room in March 1821. Richmond moved his family into this one room, the cooking ovens had been completed in what was to be the kitchen, but the room could not be very well heated because there was not clapboards or paper over the boarding, the moving was done cross lots and the place where the bank was cut away so that the loaded sleds could get off the ice of the river. Possible that this property was later joint-owned by nephews, EMBERT H. JONES and ALMON A. JONES. I have not found the place and date of the marriage of Richmond Jones and his wife ACHSA P. GAMMON, but the date must have been around 1844, for awhile they lived in the Snells Hill district of Turner, then removed to Portland, Maine, where they lived until going to Wisconsin in 1851. They had two sons, CHARLES A. JONES, b.1846 and EBEN PITTS JONES b. 1848, both in Portland, ME. Any information on the JONES family in this area is appreciated. I would appreciate any info on all Gilkey's of ME. I have the book "History The Town of Gorham" and it has very little on the Gilkey's. This book is on loan to me through the I.L.L. Program. My web is: www.earthlink.net/~marian11/ Please take a look and let me know if you can find any info. Thanks Marian L. Sohn GILKEY Marion Sohn 97-09-29 18:50:12 EDT Hi, back again. I have one question for the Gorham Gilkey lookup. She mentions that she has the History of Gorham book. Please ask her the specific name and author of the book. I have the History of Gorham, Maine, by McLellan, and I think it has quite a bit of information about the Gilkey family. They came to Gorham about 1750. As far as I can tell, James Giley came from Falmouth. Considering the information that I found in the History of Gorham that I have, I'm not sure what specific details she wants. Does she just want a copy of the vital records they still have? Does she have specific questions or contradictions that she's trying to figure out? Julie GILKEY Marion Sohn 97-09-30 19:03:27 EDT Dear Lee Ann and Julie: Thank you both so much for taking the time to find info on the Gilkey Clan. As you can see in our web site:www.earthlink.net/~marian11/ I'm related to the Gilkey's. I've come to a dead stop at Meigs Co. OH, but Nadine at: jrdavis@cdsnet.net told me to get the History of Gorham, Maine. This I did through the I.L.L. program, but they sent me the History of the Town of Gorham, Maine, by Josiah Pierce, printed in 1862, published by Foster, Cushing, and Bailey 1997David Colby Young, Maine Author PO Box 152, Danville, Maine 04223
