These brothers had been sucessful merchants in Bristol and after their settlement in this country they carried on an extensive business as importers. It also appears that they had a brother Richard who came with them and was a partner in their business. All three of these men are called Mr. on the old records and were doubtless men of wealth and good standing in the community. Mr. Percival LOWELL died Jan. 8, 1665. His wife Rebecca died Dec. 28, 1645. I find no record of any children. Mr. Richard Lowell was born in Bristol, England in 1602, died in Newbury in 1682. His first wife, whose name is unknown, died in 1642. His second wife was Margaret. By his first wife he had two children, born in Newbury: 1. Percival, born in 1639 2. Rebecca, born Jan. 27, 1642 It is probable that he had children born before he emigrated to this country. By his second wife, Margaret he had two children: 1. Samuel, born in 1644 2. Thomas, born Sept. 28, 1649. Richard Lowell died Aug. 5, 1682 Mr. John Lowell was twice married. His first wifeÕs name is unknown. His second wife was Elizabeth GOODALE, who died Apr. 1651. He died June 29, 1647. Had children as follows, born in Newbury: 1. Joseph, born Nov 28, 1639 2. Benjamin, born Sept. 12, 1642 3. Thomas, born June 4, 1644 4. Elizabeth, born Feb. 16, 1646 The old records state that he had other children: John, Peter, Mary and James but no dates of birth are given, and it is probable they were born in England. Benjamin, son of John and Elizabeth GOODALE-LOWELL, married Ruth WOODMAN, Oct 17, 1666. Had children as follows: 1. Ruth, born Sept. 4, 1667 2. Elizabeth, born Oct. 16, 1699 3. Gideon, born, Sept. 3, 1672 3. Samuel, born Jan. 13, 1676 4. Edmund, born Sept. 24, 1684 Gideon, son of Percival and Mary-CHANDLER-LOWELL, married Mary ______. Had a daughter Mary, born Mar. 1, 1693. Richard, son of Percival and Mary-CHANDLER-LOWELL, married Sara BROWN, Apr 8, 1695. Had two children: 1. Hannah, born Mar. 11, 1696 2. Sarah, born Apr. 10, 1705 According to a footnote in Rev. Thomas SmithÕs Journal all those bearing the Lowell name in Portland, Westbrook and Windham, descend from Gideon LOWELL who came from Amesbury to Portland and died there in 1761. He appears to have been a property owner here and had a house near ClarkÕs Point where his son Abner was born, Jan. 3, 1741, died in 1828, aged 87 years. Abner LOWELL, son of Gideon, married Mercy PAINE, Jan. 1, 1765. Doubtless, Gideon LOWELL, had other children, as I find in Rev. Dr. Deanes record of marriages, the following. Nov. 30, 1767, married William LUNT, to Mary LOWELL. Again Jan. 10, 1787, married Amos GREENLIEF to Polly LOWELL. But it is through Abner and Mercy-PAINE LOWELL that all the present families of that name descend. ArthurÕs Dictionaty of Family names says ÒGow or Gowan The Gowan or Smith of a Highland clan was held in high estimation. His skill in the manufacture of military weapons was usually united with great dexterity in using them with the great strength of body which the profession required, the gowan usually ranked as third officer in the household.. The first of this family in America was William Gowen who lived at Kittery, Me. In the early records he was sometimes SMITH and at others GOWEN. William Gowen was a carpenter and married at Kittery, Me. May 14, 1667, Elizabeth FROST, the daughter of Nicholas Frost, the first settler of Elliott, Me. She was born at Kittery, May 10, 1640. Her mother is said to have been Bertha Cadwalla, and Elizabeth was a sister to Maj. Charles FROST, who was so prominent in the early history of Maine and they had eight children. William Gowen died at the part of Kittery then called ÒBarwickÓ Apr. 2, 1686. He was buried according to the custom of the times, there having been purchased for the funeral, seven gallons of rum, a gallon of wine with sugar and spices for the same. His son William was killed by the Indians in 1691, and his gun was taken from him for which his fatherÕs estate was obliged to pay L. 1-10 shs. Nicholas Gowen was the oldest son of William. He was born about 1668. He married about 1693, Abigail HODSDON, a daughter of Benoni HODSDON of Berwick, and they had nine children. He was admitted to practice as an Attorney in the Superior Court of Common Pleas and was sworn according to law in 1703. This was twenty two years before Noah Emery, the reputed first lawyer in Maine commenced practice. He was representative to the Gerneal Court of Mass. from Kittery in 1709. His house is said to be the oldest one now standing in the town of Elliot and must be nearly two hundred years old, and perhaps more. He died about 1742 and his wife later. He gave his estate to his youngest son, Hon James Gowen, to care for him and his wife during their lives in 1739-1740. William Gowen was the sixth child of Nicholas and was born Apr. 4, 1705, married June 26, 1724, Jane Gowen, a daughter of John and Mercy Gowen. She was his cousin. They lived at Kittery. He died in 1748 and his widow went to Boston where she died Sept. 20, 1750, aged 44 years. They had six children. In 1722, he was a scout in Capt. John WheelwrightsÕs Co. William Gowen Jr. was the second child of William, was born Mar. 3, 1727. His wifeÕs name was Abigail and they had children. He was a soldier in Capt. Noah EmeryÕs Co. in 1757, and Mar. 10, 1760 he enlisted in Capt. John WentworthÕs Co. and died in the service Sept. 29, 1760. He is said to have left a family of small children, and his widow may have married in 1766, John HODSDON. James Gowen, son of William Jr. was born Feb. 18, 1754 and was but six years of age when his father died in the army. He was taken by his fatherÕs uncle. Hon. James Gowen, who was a very prominant man in his time. He had no sons so the boy had a good opportunity by being with one who could give him the advantage of his position. When he became of age, James Gowen started in life for himself. He had evidently joined the Quakers at Kittery and about 1776, came to Falmouth, and in 1778, bought land in Westbrook near the Duck Pond. He married May 5, 1778, Edna KNIGHT, a daughter of Moses and Hannah-AKERS-KNIGHT, who then lived on the Haste Place, in Quaker Lane, in Deering. She wa born Jan. 7, 1756, and her descendants knew of her as a smart capable woman. She died Aug. 17, 1814, aged 58 years. They lived on the old Duck Pond Road and their house is still standing and now-1897- is occupied by their great grandchildren. The family grave-yard is in the field opposite the house. James Gowen was an active stirring man. He kept a Tavern, carried on farming, lumbering and other businesses. He was a large sized man and always wore the Quaker garb and attended the meetings of that sect of Mass. in 1810, and was a man of infulence in his time. WILLIAM CAMPBELL see pages 335-336 in ÒWindham in the PastÓ ref. his first wife and family. The second Mrs. Campbell, bore the unenviable reputation of being a witch Doctress of uncommon ability and in that early day was often called upon to exercise her skill, and many stories are told of her uncanny powers. Rev. Mr. Smith maked the following entry in the church book, under date of Oct. 30, 1785. Baptized Elizabeth the wife of William CAMPBELL, Jane, Lydia, Laranna, Joel Pike and Betty the children of William and Elizabeth CampbellÓ There was also a son James who married Peggy HENDLY, the widow of Nathaniel Mugford. Their intention was entered on the Town record, Apr. 15, 1831. The name is spelled Campbell, Cambel, Camble and Camel. The family has been extinct in Windham for many years. DOCT. STEPHEN SWETT was the first physician to settle in Gorham and like many of the old worthies, but little has been preserved in regard to him in the town annals. The following however may be regarded as correct so far as it goes: Dr. Swett came from Exeter N.H. about 1770, and was married and had seven children at the time of his settlement here and seven more born in this town. He was probably the son of Moses Swett of Exeter, N.H. and grandson of Capt. Benjamin SWETT, who was killed by the Indians at Black Point, now Scarborough, June 19, 1677, at which time sixty men besides himself were either killed or wounded. The emigrant ancestor of Doct. SWETT, was John Swett, who came from Devonshire, England, and was one of the grantees of Newbury, Mass. Dec. 7, 1642. His son, Capt. Benjmain, was born in England about 1626, and married in Nov. 1647, Hester WEARE, and moved to Hampton, N.H. in 1663. He left eleven children. Doct. Stephen SWETT, married May 8, 1756, Sarah ADAMS, a daughter of Doct. Samuel ADAMS of Durham, N.H. Her brother Lieut. Col. Winborn ADAMS was killed at the battle of Stillwater, Sept. 19, 1777. She was probably a descendant of GovÕs . Winthrop and Dudley and perhaps a cousin of President John Adams. Doct SWETT had lived in Gorham about five years when the Revolutionary War broke out, and conscious of the responsibility of the times he enlisted as surgeon, May 7, 1775, in Col. Edmund PhinneyÕs 31st Regiment of foot and went to Cambridge with the regiment in July, where he probably served until their discharge, Dec. 31, 1775. The officers were not at first commissioned, and Oct. 6, 1775, he, with others, was recommended by Gen. Washington for a commission of his rank. There is no further record, although tradition says he had other service. Doct. SWETT lived near Fort Hill, in Gorham, afterwards in Windham and died in Otisfield, Jan. 6, 1807. said to have been more than 75 years of age. His wife died in the same town, May 3, 1808. Some descendants of ANTHONY BRACKETT of Portlsmouth, N.H. History tells us that the name Brackett was originally Brockett, and that they came from Wales to England and Scotland. among those who came to this country with Gov. John Winthrop in 1630 were four brothers: Richard, Peter, William and Anthony BRACKETT. Richard settled in Braintree, Mass. Peter settled in Portsmouth, N.H. Anthony Brackett was married but his wifes name is unknown. He appears to have had at least five children as follows: 1. Anthony Jr. born about 1638 2. Thornal, born about 1640 3. Eleanor, born about 1642, m. Dec 26, 1661 John JOHNSON 4. John, born about 1645 5. Jane, born in 1647, m. 1st Dec. 28, 1671, Mathiah HAINES, 2nd Apr. 19, 1697, Isaac MARSTON. Anthony BRACKETT Jun. son of Anthony the emigrant, born in Portsmouth, N.H. about 1638, is known in history as Capt. Anthony, came to Falmouth, now Portland, Me. with his brother Thomas prior to 1662. We first meet with his name here in 1662, as a witness to the delivery of the Bramhall farm to Hope Allen, June 3 of that year. He was twice married. His first wife was Annie MITTON, daughter of Michael MITTON, and they lived on the hundred acres of land at Back Cove, granted her by her grandfather, Geroge Cleves. He subsequently enlarged his farm to four hundred acres. His second wife was Susanna DRAKE. From DrakeÕs Indian Wars, we learn the following facts: Capt. Anthony Brackett was an early settler on Casco Bay, where his posterity yet remain. The family were large land holders in Falmouth between the years 1680 and 1690, under a title of government signed by President Danforth. When Casco, now Portland, was destroyed by the Indians in 1676, Capt. Brackett and his wife and one child were taken by the Indains and landed by them on the north side of the bay. This was on the 11th of August 1676, and the Nov. following they made their escape. They found an old canoe in which they escaped to the other side of the bay, where they got on board a vessel and arrived safe in Pisquatagua, now Portsmouth. Capt. Brackett returned to Falmouth, Me. in 1679. He became a selectman and Capt. of a company and when Gov. Andros erected forts there in 1688, he was put in command. He was killed by the Indians on his farm at Back Cove Sept. 21, 1689. Capt Anthony BRACKETT and his first wife Annie MITTON had five children all born in Falmouth, Me: 1. Anthony, killed by the Indians 1689 2. Seth, killed by the Indians 1689 3. Mary, married Nathaniel WITCHER 4. Keziah, married 1st a PATTERSON, 2nd Joseph MAYLEM 5. Jane Capt BrackettÕs second wife and several of his children escaped to Hampton, N.H. where her people lived in 1690, at which time Falmouth was destroyed by the Indians. Her son Anthony finally settled in Boston where he kept a tavern on the present School Street. His son Anthony, born in Hampton, N.H. was a rope maker and with others, leased their right in lands in Portland, Me. for 99 years and did not return. Thomas BRACKETT, son of Anthony the emigrant, came to Falmouth-Portland- prior to 1662. He lived on the homestead on ClarkÕs Point that came to his wife Mary MITTON, from her grandfather, George Cleves, the first settler of Falmouth, Maine. He was killed by the Indians, Aug. 11, 1676, at ClarkÕs Point and his wife and children were carried off by the Indians, and she died within a year. Her children returned to Portsmouth, N.H. In 1665, Thomas received a deed from his mother-in-law, Elizabeth HARVEY, widow of Michael MITTON, of fifty acres of land, for the love she bore Thomas Brackett, who married my daughter, Mary MITTON. In 1671, he received a deed from Elizabeth Harvey, widow- her second husband had died- for natural love and parental affection that she beareth her son-in-law, Thomas Brackett and Mary his wife, and also in consideration, that he engages to maintain her in meat and drink, apparel, housing and lands purchased by her first husband, washing, lodging and all other things necessary and convenient for during my natural life. In consideration, her son-in-law, has the housing and lands purchased by her first husband, Michael MITTON, of her father George Cleves, all land on the neck, dwelling house, out housing, tillage, wood, ect. all cattle, young and old and all household stuff, but said Thomas is not to sell any land, without consent of his wife, and if his wife died he is to enjoy the use for his life and at his death to go to his children. As late as 1727, the court gave administration in Thomas Bracketts estate to his son Joshua and in 1728, the court gave him administration on the estate of his grandfather, Michael MITTON, who died in 1660. Windham, Maine vital records Family records written by Samuel Dole. Angleised OÓLeary and Leary, mordenized LARY, LARY and LARA The first American Ancestor of the family, so far as we know was Dennis who emigrrated to this country from Kilkenney, he landed first at York, Me. From there he came to Gorham, Me. and lived for a while in the McLellan family. Just what time he came here is unknown, but his name appears on the Town Records in 1744, when he was a taxpayer. He served in the French and Indiah war as a substitute for a man named Tate, and from him received a lot of land in Gorham, for his service. This land was in the present village and was scituated on South Street. Here he settled and spent the remainder of his life. If the inscription on his grave stone is to be relied on, he was born in 1694, and died in 1796, at the extreme age of 102 years. He was twice married. His first wife was Margaret Brown, but of her I can learn nothing save that they had two children: 1. John: who was drowned at an early age, date of birth and death unknown. 2. James: born in Gorham, July 4, 1755, died in Turner, Me. Jan. 31, 1842. He spelled the name Lara. James, son of Dennis and Margaret-Brown-LARRY, married Molly or Mary HOBBS of old Falmouth. She was born Aug. 29, 1758, died in Turner, Me. Aug. 1850, married Mar. 28, 1782 by Rev. Ebenezer Williams, second minister of the Third Parish in Falmouth, then called New Casco. James LARA and his wife Molly had children as follows; 1. Olive; born Nov. 24, 1783, died in 1802 2. Nancy; born Nov. 29, 1785 3. John; born Oct. 1787, died in 1791 4. Daniel; born Nov. 1789, died in 1803 5. Isaiah; born June 24, 1793, died Jan. 7, 1869 6. Jane; born Sept. 4, 1795 7. Sally; born 1797, died 1800 8. Jonathan; born 1799, died 1804 Of the above children, Olive, Daniel and Jonathan were buried on the Col. Jonah HOBBS place at Black Shop, Falmouth. John was buried in what was known as the ÒFriend YardÓ near PrideÕs Bridge, Deering. Sally was buried in the ÒDeacon Bulier YardÓ, near the same place. James LARA served in the Continental army nearly or quite four years. We find in the History of Col. Edmond PhinneyÕs 31st Reg. written by Nathan Goold, that he enlisted in Capt. John RiceÕs company on May 18, 1775, but the following abstract from the pension rolls obtained by one of his grandsons shows that he served in other companies. We copy verbalim: Dept. of the Interior, Pension office. Washington D.C., May 21, 1872 James LARA, Dec 15, 1775 served in the company of Capt. Hart Williams in Col. PhinneyÕs regiment, Mass., and at the end of the year enlisted for three years in the company of Capt. Silas Burbank, and 12Ó Mass. Regiment, Col. Brewer. Discharged at West Point, Dec 15, 1779. Present at the surrender of Gen. Burgoyne and on the retreat from Fort Ticonderoga, at Hoberttown when wounded in the left shoulder. While the Army was at Valley Forge received in an engagement, a sabre cut cleaving off a portion of the left cheek, and flesh from the lift shoulder, cutting the cords of the arm. Lieut. James Means-living at Westbrook in 1818- who testifies to his service as well as to his bravery as a soldier, and to the faithful discharge of his duties, enlisted him on Dec 1776. He was taken prisoner at the time of receiving the sabra injuries, carried to Philadelphia, after a short period, liberated and on his recovery joined his companions again. It is supposed he resided- if not before- after his military service in Gorham, Me. J.H.Baker, Commissioner From a private letter written by a grand-nephew of James LARA, we take the following extract, ÒWhen I was a boy, this uncle James Lara, visited Gorham passing through Windham by the way of Gambo-now Newhall-stopping at my fatherÕs blacksmith shop where he told of his conflict with a British horseman. It was a British sabre and American bayonet. The American was wounded in the left shoulder, loosing some blood. The BritonÕs loss was more serious, it might have been his life, as the American rode his fine white horse into camp, for which the colonies paid his a good price.Ó This was doubtless on the retreat from Ticonderoga. He was born in that town, Dec. 14, 1746. He died in Windham Apr. 16, 1811. He married on Apr. 20, 1766, Hannah, daughter of Ebenezer and Hannah HALL. The following is related in an old manuscript still preserved in the family of Mr. Isaiah Allen of Windham, which I am allowed to copy. ÒThree brothers by the name of HALL came to this country from England. One of them was drowned and one returned to England, and the other, Ebenezer, soon after settled on Martinicus Island, which he bought and paid for. By his first wife, whose name is unknown, he had three children: Ebenezer, Susan and Hannah. Mrs Hall died when Hannah was only one day old, and a Mrs. Green was employed to nurse and take care of the infant. Mrs. GREENÕs husband dying, Mr. HALL married her for his second wife and they had three children: Peter, Phebe and Tabitha. While these last children were quite young the house was attacked by a party of Indians. The house built of logs was constructed with reference to the probable attacks of the savages, and was successfully defended by the inmates for three days and nights. When all being quiet for some hours, Mr. HALL thinking the Indians had gone away, ventured to take a look from the scuttle window. The savages had not left, but were hid in ambush near by, and immediately shot Mr. Hall dead. As he fell back into the house the frightned children cried out ÒFather is dead,Ó The mother not being able to prevent their lamintations. The savages outside were listening found that the principal defender was out of the way, immediately battered in the door, took the mother and children present prisoners, plundered the house of such things as they cared for, set fire to the house and drove their captives before them to Canada. Williamson in his history of Maine, Vol. 2, page 326, says that Mr. Hall was killed June 10, 1757. In Canada they were seperated, and the children have never since been heard from. The mother, the former Mrs. Green, with other prisoners of war was afterwards ransomed and made her way on foot to Gorham, Me, and she afterwards married Chipman COBB. The older children by his first wife were all from home at the time of the attack on the fatherÕs house and thus escaped the fate of the rest of their family. Ebenezer was out fishing, the girls, Susan and Hannah were living in Portland. Ebenezer married and had fifteen children. He settled on the old homestead at Martinicus Island, and reports came to his sisters that he had deeded one half of the Island to a man-said to be a lawyer- that represented to him, the said Ebenezer, that the title of the Island was defective and that for one half of it he would secure him in possession of the remainder. The girls, Susan and Hannah never entered their claim for a share of the property saying their brother was in straitened circumstances, and that they were as well able to live without it as he was with it. The girls both married and settled in what is now Windham, Cumberland Co. Maine, where they have numerous descendants now living- Jan. 1, 1867. The two nearest of kin being two sisters, Tabitha and Lydia ALLEN, aged 80 and 82 years, children of Hannah and granddaughters of Ebenezer HALL, who was killed by the Indians.Ó As stated before, Peltiah Allen, son of Francis and Mary ALLEN of Kittery was born Dec. 14, 1746, married Apr. 4, 1766, Hannah HALL daughter of Ebenezer HALL, who was killed by the Indians at Martinicus Island, June 10, 1757.
