BLUE HILL.

Fourteen miles S. S. W. of Ellsworth. On stage-lines from Bucksport to Sedgwick.
First settled in 1762, by Jos. Wood and John Roundy. First called Plantation No.
5, afterward Newport. Incorporated 62d town Jan. 30, 1789. Congregational church
formed in 1772. Baptist church formed in 1806. Post-office established, 1795.
Named from a hill in the center of the town, 950 feet high. Bluehill Academy
incorporated, 1803. Population-1850, 1930; 1860, 1903; 1870, 1707; 1880, 2213.
Valuation, 1860-Polls, 431; Estates, $358,176; 1870-Polls, 432; Estates,
$397,620; 1880-Polls, 537; Estates, $449,497.
