Thirty miles S. W. of Ellsworth. On Bangor and Castine stage-line. Settled as early as 1630, by Plymouth Colony, as a trading-post, and known by name of Pentagoet. Afterwards it fell into the hands of the French, and still later into the possession of the Dutch. Baron de St. Castin, for whom it was named, settled here in 1667. Permanently settled by the English, 1760. From 1779 to declaration of peace, it was in possession of the British. It was occupied by the British, also, in the war of 1812, for nearly a year. Inc. Feb. 10, 1796, from Penobscot, and became shire town. Courts removed to Ellsworth, 1838. Population-1850, 1260; 1860, 1357; 1870, 1303; 1880, 1215.
