Twenty-two miles N. N. W. of Ellsworth, on stage line to Bangor. Settled about
1810, by Nathan Phillips. First called No. 8, which included also Otis.
Incorporated Feb. 7, 1837. Population-1840, 455; 1850, 546; 1860, 549; 1870,
448; 1880, 406. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 113; Estates, $94,388; 1870-Polls, 106;
Estates, $102,752; 1880-Polls, 90; Estates, $98,308.
