On Bangor and Calais stage-line. Once called New Bowdoin. First settled, 1763. Incorporated Feb. 26,1800, comprising township No. 7, one of the ten townships, a part of township No. 6, and the north-west part of Trenton. The part taken from No. 6, was annexed to Surry after the separation in 1820, and was re-annexed to Ellsworth in 1829. Incorporated a city Feb. 6, 1869. Population-1820, 992; 1850, 2267; 1860, 4658; 1870, 5257; 1880, 5052. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 847; Estates, $896,299; 1870- Polls, 1,097; Estates, $l,233,199; 1880-Polls, 1214; Estates, $1,456,366.
