MOUNT DESERT.

Principal village, Somesville Fifteen miles South of Ellsworth. On stage-route
to Tremont. First settled in 1608, by French Jesuits; but the settlement was
broken up by Virginians about 1616. First settled by the English in 1760.
Incorporated Feb. 17, 1789. Eden set off, Feb. 1796; Cranberry Isles, do., 1830;
Tremont, do., 1848. Population-1850, 682; 1860, 917; 1870, 918; 1880,1017.
Valuation, 1860-Polls, 196; Estates, $129,839; 1870-Polls, 226; Estates,
$158,069; 1880-Polls, 243; Estates, $160,803.
