On Bangor and Castine, Blue Hill and Sedgwick stage-lines. Granted to W. Dall, Nathaniel Snellings, Robert Treat and others in Boston. First settler, Joseph Gross, from Fort Pownal,1764; the next, Ebenezer Gross, from Boston in 1765: the next, Joseph Viles, from Milton, Mass., in 1766, who built the first framed house in 1777, which was used for holding plantation meetings, until the building of the first school-house in 1804. Zachariah Gross, first male child born 1766. Large accession made to the settlement between 1767 and 1780, from Boston. First road laid out in 1771 by John Hancock and Samuel Craig. First saw and grist mills built at lower falls by Calvin Turner, 1773. First County road through the plantation laid out in 1793. Incorporated Feb. 12, 1800.
