Twenty-two miles S. W. of Ellsworth. On Bucksport and Deer Isle stage-line. Formerly embraced Castine and a large part of Brooksville. Trading house established in 1626 by Plymouth Colony, which was abandoned in a few years. D'Aulney, a Frenchman, established himself here in 1640. In 1665 Baron De Castin came to the place, and in 1667 married a daughter of Madocawando, chief of the Tarratines. First permanent settlement by English was made in spring of 1760. Plantation name Majorbigwaduce. Incorporated Feb. 23, 1787, and named from the Indian Penops (Rocky), and auke (place). Lat. 44° 31', lon. 68° 45'. Castine set off Feb. 10, 1796.
