Twenty-five miles S. of Ellsworth. Terminus of stage-line from Ellsworth, South
West Harbor, on P., B. & M. steamboat line. Formerly a part of Mount Desert,
detached and incorporated under the name of Mansel, June 3, 1848; name changed
August 8 of the same year. Population- 1850, 1425; 1860, 1768; 1870, 1822; 1880,
2011. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 407: Estates, $192,984; 1870-Polls, 419; Estates,
