Before 1820, he had married Abigail Livingston and was in Edmeston, Otsego County, NY. Later they were in Cortland County, NY and before 1840 had removed to Steuben County, NY where both died; she in 1845, and he about 1870. A younger brother, Samuel, went to Allen County, Ohio, where his descendants now live. They spell the name BASSITT. A brother , William, entered in the census of 1820 as William, Jr., like Daniel went to Otsego County and on to Steuben, about 1857 removed to Ohio and died on 8 March 1867, at the home of his son, Philo C. Bassitt in Ovid, MICH. The wife of William was Susanna Livingston, a sister of Abigail, wife of Daniel. There is a tradition that the father of these men came from France. The census of 1790 shows a William Basset as living in the town of Hopkinton, Washington Co., RI; the only Basset or Bassett in the state. Both the spelling Basset and the forename William tend to indicate that this William Basset was the father of Daniel, Samuel, and William I have mentioned. In 1800 he was again reported from Hopkinton, and next to him lived a Lewis Basset whose family was such that Lewis may have been a son of William. Samuel of Ohio named one of his sons Lewis. I desire to learn anything further concerning the family in RI, about their removal to NY, and previous to 1790. On micro cards -- years 6 Jun 1896 - 30 Apr 1941 -- file 929.173 B747a Dear Bassett members -- In a previous posting I submitted query 7298. Following are responses to that query as copied verbatim from the Transcript: 20 Jan 1919 Answers *7298 BASSETT. F.G.L. 8 Jan 1919 I tried in vain during the past dozen years to interest descendants of the RI Bassetts in tracing the family ...names mentioned...Samuel Bassett in Kingston, RI about 1690. 2 Samuel Bassetts in this time period of same age. One was Samuel3 (Nathaniel2 William1). (The Old Colony Family) The other was Samuel3 (William2,1) of Lynn ... William Bassett, born 1703, married Experience Brand at Westerly, RI, about 1730, lived in Charleston, RI where a family was born to them, not including a William. A William Bassett of Charleston, RI, very probably a son of William and Experience, married in Hopkinton, RI, 12 Apr 1752, Mary Closson, and settled in Hopkinton, RI Mack 3 May 1919 Answers *7298 BASSETT. Mack 20 Jan 1919 I am much pleased with the response to my inquiry concerning the Bassetts, and I too hope that anyone that can assist will do so. As a possible prompting I offer further data that I already have. On 25 Nov 1768 Joseph Bassett and Mary Mowry were married by Daniel Smith, Justice, of Gloucester. The census of RI records a John Bassett, of Scituate...(describes census family counts)...In that same census a Joseph Bassett of Gloucester, apparently the one mentioned, had one son and 2 daughters under 16 years old. That 1774 census records also a William Basset, living in Charleston. His family, besides himself, consisted of one male under 16 and 2 females over 16...other names and dates mentioned: William Bassett, drafted in Hopkinton, Oct or Nov 1775 and later served at different times until 1778...said to have been born in Hopkinton in 1753 and died in Plainfield, Otsego County, NY, 24 Oct 1843 or 1848...census of Plainfield for 1850 on 24 Jul enumerates a William Bassett, born in RI...wife was Esther...children were Diodamea, Perry, Peter, Morris, Orrin, Sliliman, Floris, James...all born in NY...this William was a son of the Revolutionary soldier who died in Plainfield in 1846...on 2 Jul 1778 William Bassett and Margery White were married in Gloucester...14 Nov 1779, Peter Bassett of Hardwick, MA and Hannah Linsey of Providence were married ... the William Bassett who was born in RI about 1796 later moved to Otsego County, NY, then to Steuben, and on to Ohio and MICH. There is much data concerning his descendants. His brother Samuel went to Allen County, Ohio...Bassetts may have been from France. French settled in RI in the 18th century. F.G.L. Dear BASSETT members-- This is the 3rd/last installment of responses to query #7298 as copied verbatim from the Transcript. 5 May 1919 Answers *7298 BASSETT, F.G.L. 3 Feb 1919 The seven children of William and Margery Basset are in Uxbridge printed records, copied from the records of the Friends' Church of South Uxbridge. William Basset born 29, 10th month, 1747; Margery, his wife, born 16, 10th month, 1754, died 18, 8th month, 1791. Are you certain about Martin L. Bassett of Orrington as son of Charles Bassett?. If so, who is Charles Bassett of Orrington? I have, purporting to be from the Orrington records, Martin L. Bassett and Jesse V. Bassett, sons of John Shepard Bassett who was born in Bucksport, ME, in 1808, to Jesse and Mary (Paine) Bassett. That this is the descent of Martin L. Bassett seemed to be confirmed in that the widow Mary, grandmother of Martin L. Bassett, died in Lowell, MA. The wife of John Shepard Bassett was "Sylvia", which is the same as you give to wife of Charles and mother of Martin L... So that the question resolves itself into who was the father -- John S. or Charles? In either case, who was Jesse Bassett of Bucksport, ME? The census of 1790 shows Ebenezer Bassett in Bucksport with 3 sons, one of whom may well have been Jesse. Jabez Bassett was of Vassalboro. Samuel Bassett of Vassalboro married Lucretia Crowell, daughter of Jabez Crowell, so we may well suppose that Jabez Bassett was their son. Samuel Bassett was a pensioner in 1844, living with Jabez in Vassalboro. Will someone tell us more fully about these Bucksport, Orrington, and Vassalboro Bassetts?! --> NOTE <-- The preceding was copied verbatim from an article in 1919. I have no further info on any of these people and the persons requesting an answer are no longer with us. Please do not write me asking for more info on these people -- I don't have it-- except for Jesse of Bucksport.
