Oliver Wesson Dickey, Clinton, Maine Submitted by Cheryl Dickey-Whitish I am writing in response to the request for information on any of the soldiers from Clinton who died during the Civil War. Oliver Wesson Dickey was my great-great grandfather and I can give you some information concerning him. He was born in Clinton on April 17, 1829, the son of Oliver Crowell Dickey and his first wife, Margaret or Mary Ellen (Pushaw) Dickey. On July 1, 1852 he was united in marriage to Caroline M. Webber by Ebenezer Lewis. They had four sons, William, Franklyn, Charles and George. Oliver W. Dickey enlisted at Augusta on October 13, 1862 and was mustered in for a period of nine months. He was a private in Co. C, 24th Infantry Maine Volunteers. His commanding officer was Samuel S. Brown of Clinton. He contracted typhoid fever while he was stationed at Bonnet Carre, Louisiana sometime after February 26, 1863. He died at the General Hospital, U.S. Barracks, New Orleans, Louisiana on March 17, 1863 and was buried on the hospital grounds. Two and a half years later, on August 29, 1865, Oliver's wife Caroline died and their four sons were orphaned. They became the wards of Caroline's parents Loring and Olive (Eastman) Webber. $8.00 per month was paid as a pension until the youngest turned 18 on March 16, 1877. As for the sons, William moved to Santa Rosa, California. Frank married, had two daughters and lived in Richmond, Maine. Charles stayed in the area, married and became the father of twenty-two children,(all by the same wife, all single births, all lived to adulthood and all married). George moved to Hudson, Wisconsin, he had a son Irvin who died of wounds received in battle in France in 1918 during World War I. I hope this is what you were looking for. I am descended from Charles through his ninth child Everett. Keep up the interesting work! Best Regards, Cheryl Dickey-Whitish You are welcome to put the information about Oliver Wesson Dickey wherever you think it might help people. I've been researching the Dickey family history for 18 years but have been concentrating mainly on the story of my great grandparents Charles and Effie (Estes) Dickey, (anecdotes, photos newspaper articles, etc.). I'm a newcomer to the internet so am only beginning to find my way around. Thanks for the address to the genealogy website.
