First settled, 1760. Six miles S. of Augusta. On the Maine Central R. R. Formerly a part of Pittston, from which it was set off, and named in honor of the Gardiner family, the principal owners. Incorporated February 17, 1803. Number of inhabitants then, 650. Incorporated as a city, 1850; soon after which, what is now West Gardiner was set off and formed a separate town. Population, including West Gardiner-1850, 6486; 1860, 4497; 1870, 4497; 1880, 4439. Valuation, 1860-Polls, 811; Estates, $1,723,561; 1870-Polls, 970; Estates, $2,179,243; 1880-Polls, 1171; Estates, $2,379,129. Municipal election, first Monday in March.
