LITCHFIELD.

Sixteen miles S. S.W. of Augusta. On stage-line to Lisbon Falls. Terminus of
line to Richmond. Settled about 1776. First called Smithfield Plantation, from
numerous families by name of Smith. Inc. Feb. 18, 1795. Litchfield Academy
incorporated 1845. Population-1850, 2100; 1860, 1704; 1870, 1506; 1880, 1310.
Valuation, 1860-Polls, 402; Estates, $475,149; 1870-Polls, 383; Estates,
$496,908; 1880-Polls, 382; Estates, $454,330.
