Four miles W. of Augusta. On stage-line from Augusta to Winthrop, and Augusta to
Farmington. Settled, 1775. Incorporated Aug. 12, 1850, under name of Kennebec.
Composed of parts of Augusta, Hallowell, Litchfield, Winthrop, and Readfield.
Name changed April 18, 1854. Population-1860, 813; 1870, 732; 1880, 623.
Valuation, 1860-Polls, 193; Estates, $295,792; 1870-Polls, 160; Estates,
$320,219; 1880-Polls, 180; Estates, $291,200.
