The Kennebec Valley was the birthplace of 
the writer of this little volume; his childhood
days were spent in a small town upon the 
river's bank.  His maturer years have been 
spent in this beautiful valley.  The towns
treated of in this work are among the most
important in the State.  The writer wishes
to give a faithful record of the wondrous 
past; such a record as will be read with in-
terest at every fireside.  It is believe that 
the work is, as far as is possible in a first
edition, correct; and it is recommended to 
the careful consideration of the inhabitants
of the valley, and it is hoped that the general
reader may become interested.
