Walter Crouch and the runaway wife in 1828 Courtesy of Tina Vickery Daily Kennebec Journal Augusta, Maine January 4, 1900 An Old-Time Notice. A clipping taken from an old paper and sent to the Journal, shows what the husbands of 72 years ago used to do where the wives deserted them. This is the notice has it appeared: NOTICE. "Frailty they name is woman."---Shakespear. My case-hardened wife, Charlotte, has again fled from my just authority and protection without advising with me or consulting with me, on this doubtful and impolite step, nor is this the only offense of the kind that she has committed--for nine years past she has annually served me the same sort of trick, and always about the same time of year, which I cannot account for. I had had Job like patience, and have forborne thus far to tell the world of the shame she has cast upon me. Now let all who it may concern know, that from this day forth, I will pay no debts of her contraction. Walter Crouch. N. B.--- This in the tenth time she has ran away--nine time have I taken her in again, and if she ever takes me in again, I'll be ----- W. C. Dated Dec. 8th, 1828.
