One hundred and seventy persons were confirmed in Augusta, at the Catholic church on Sunday forenoon, by Bishop James A. Healey, of Portland. In the afternoon the Bishop confirmed sixty in Hallowell. A large gathering of the friends of Eli Jones, who has just returned from his missionary labors in Syria, assembled at his home in China, on Saturday evening last, to extend to him a happy greeting and welcome. He gave a very interesting account of his travels in the Holy Land, and the wonderful success of the Friends' mission at Mount Lebanon, in Syria. The Journal, says E. C. Allen, Esq. is the largest individual taxpayer in Augus-ta. This year he pays a tax of $1,664.40, being assessed on $41,000 of real estate, and $44,200 of personal property. Mr. Allen is quite an extensive owner of shipping. The Journal says that Willie T. Atherton, son of Wm. P. Atherton, of Hallowell, died suddenly at his home, Tuesday afternoon. The dedication of the Erskine High School will occur Wednesday afternoon, June 27, at Chadwick's corner, South China. The Journal says that Monday, a man by the name of Merrill, from Manchester, came before Judge Andrews, and made a complaint that he (Merrill) had caught two bass at the Outlet. The Judge fined him $7, which he paid and departed. A short time afterwards, Fish Warden I. A. Carr of East Winthrop, arrived at the Municipal Court room, to make a complaint against Merrill for taking bass illegally, and was somewhat surprised to find that the fisherman had stolen a march on him. It seems that the warden had caught Mer- rill in the act of catching bass on Sunday.
