CAMDEN.

Eight miles N. of Rockland, onW. H. Benjamin's stage-line to Bangor; also on
steamboat lines from Portland and Boston to Bangor. Indian name, Megunticook.
Originally a part of the Muscongus grant. First settled by Jas. Richards, May 8,
1769. Incorporated the 72d town, Feb. 17, 1791, and named in honor of Lord
Camden. Contains 26,880 acres. Population in 1790, 331; 1800-872; 1810-1607;
1820-1828; 1830-2200; 1840-3005; 1850, 4005; 1860-4588; 1870-4512; 1880-4386.
