HOPE.

Fourteen miles N. W. of Rockland. On Camden and Searsmont stage-line. Originally
called Barrettstown, from Charles Barrett, of New Ipswich, N, H., the original
proprietor. Settled, 1782. Inc. June 23, 1804, and embraced a territory of
thirty-three square miles; 1843, a portion was annexed to Appleton.
Population-1850, 1180; 1860, 1065; 1870, 907: 1880, 830. Valuation, 1860-Polls,
231; Estates, $241,094; 1870-Polls, 211; Estates, $251,650; 1880-Polls, 237;
Estates, $211,985.
