Twelve miles E. of Rockland. Formerly a part of Vinalhaven. Daily communication
with. Rockland by steamer. Operations in granite began by Gen. Davis Tillson in
1870. Incorporated Feb. 7, 1878. Population-600; 1880,220. Valuation,
1877-Polls, 201; Estates, $46,941; 1880-Polls, 204; Estates, $40,028.
