Twenty miles S. S. E. from Rockland, to which weekly communication is made by Packet. Includes seven Islands-Matinicus Isle contains about eight hundred acres; Ragged Island, about three hundred and fifty acres, and Matinicus Rock, about ten acres. Matinicus Rock, situated five miles south of Matinicns, has a light station and steam whistle. Organized, 1840. Population-1850, 220; 1860, 276; 1870, 277; 1880, 243.
