SOUTH THOMASTON.

Four miles S. of Rockland. Terminus of Littlefield & Butler's stage-line, also
on stage-line from Owl's Head to Rockland. Indian name, "Wessaweskeag,"
afterwards contracted to "Weskeag," and afterwards to "Keag." First settled by
Elisha Snow, from Brunswick, 1667. Set off from Thomaston, and incor. July 28,
1848. Population-1850, 1442; 1860, 1615; 1870, 1693; 1880, 1771. Valuation,
1860-Polls, 324; Estates, $343,462; 1870-Polls, 379; Estates, $408,145;
1880-Polls, 441; Estates, $321,861.
