Three miles S. W. of Rockland. On Knox and Lincoln Railroad. First known as a trading post as early as 1630. Settlement commenced about 1719, but, on account of the depredations of the Indians, nothing of a permanent character seems to have been effected until the arrival of Mason Wheaton, in 1763. Originally belonged to the Waldo Patent, and embraced, until 1848, Rockland and South Thomaston. Incorporated March 20, 1777. Population-1790, 799; 1800, 402; 1810, 2100; 1820, 2651; 1830, 4231; 1840, 2627; 1850, 2723; 1860, 3620; 1870, 3092; 1880, 3017.
