The "Old Man" is president [sic, vice chairman] of the Union Pacific Railway now, but he is rounding out 56 years of railroad service that began in 1883 [at Rogers, AR] as telegraph operator for the ST louis & Santa Fe (sic, San Francisco "Frisco') Railroad in a God-forsaken [truly a PARADISE] Kansas four corners.. Carl Jr, the Boston visitor, is executive vice president of the Chicago, St Paul, Milwaukee & Omaha Railway, Carl 3d, his son directs a rail-truck tie-up at Sioux Falls, SD.       Another son of senior Carl Gray is Russell D Gray, 7 Amherst road, Wellesley, who has been living in Boston as representative of the Pennsylvania Road, but is just moving to New York as general freight agent for the N Y Ont &W RR. He leaves his daughter Eleanor as a student at Dana Hall, however.       The third brother, Dr Howard K Gray is most intimate with the interior if that prominent Massachusetts roving citizen, "Jimmie" Roosevelt: Dr Gray operated on James Roosevelt at the Mayo Clinic last summer.       "Did a complete cure on him," said Carl Gray Jr, with pride. "Rochester is only 27 miles from St Paul so I see Howard pretty often.       Distance is nothing in a railroad man's life. Carl Gray Jr, between his father's peregrinations in his youth and his own in the business has moved 40 times and lived in 21 cities in 50 years. He was born April 14, 1889 [Wichita, KS] and though his appearance belies it, is a grandfather twice over. His hobby is taking color movies of his two little granddaughters.       He was in Boston on railroad business he admitted. Of course, there is railroad business, he said: in fact, in the next quarter you will see freight-car loadings up an average of 12 to 14 percent with a high of 23 percent around the midwest basic industrial centers, he predicted.       He is enthusiastic, to, Carl Raymond 3d's trucking business in South Dakota, started in 1929 as a pioneer rail-trucking coordination. He believes it the ultimate solution of transportation problems for this century. Moreover, he says he can prove that his son holds a record as best juvenile football coach in the country.       Not all the Grays are railroad men. Some of them are women. Mrs Harriette Flora Gray, wife of Carl Dr, was the 1935 (sic, 1937) All-American Mother of the Golden Rule Foundation.       Mrs Gladys Beach Gray, wife of Carl Jr, shares her husband's interest in making home-movies: she does the titling and cutting and now that her children are grown, accompanies him on his business trips; but she will not be Queen when he is King of the Winter Carnival the first week in February.       "Our carnival in St Paul is a civic enterprise" explained Carl Gray Jr. "Some 125 business concerns have marching units a minimum of 130 marchers in each, and of course costumes, bands, floats, all the trimmings. Each marching unit has its own queen and then a committee selects the Carnival Queen from that group. That way she is a local St paul girl, a business girl, too.       Carl Gray Jr, will be crowned as King Bores [King Bores V] Jan 29 [1939] in a resplendent costume of red military blouse plastered with "decorations" and medals; infantry blue pants, a black velvet cape with ermine waistlength, and ermine chapeau and a gold sceptre.             ************* [Based on plans described in "Arabian Nights," the 1939 ice place provided the St Paul Winter Carnival with most graceful and fanciful of modern castles. Situated at Lake Como, it was built in three weeks by crew of 200 who often braved 35-mph winds. Crews from Paramount, Universal, Fox and Metro-Goldwyn attended the storming of the castle. Included in the group storming the castle was Warren Burger, who later tose to chief justice of the U D Supreme Court."]              *************       Carl Gray Jr, is no stranger to New England, for since boyhood he has spent his summers at his parents [Gray Rocks] on the St Georges River at Pleasant Point, Cushing, Maine.            <>-------<>------<> Additional Comment: See: http://files.usgwarchives.net/me/knox/newspapers/carlgray5nw.txt For photograph of the three Carl R Grays and other pictures, go to; http://collections.mnhs.org/, then Visual Recources Database, type in "GRAY", punch "Search".
