Twelve miles South of Wiscasset, terminus of Frye's stage-line; terminus of semi-daily steamboat line, in summer, from Bath, and in winter, daily from Wiscasset. On daily steamboat line from Augusta, in summer. On weekly packet line from Portland and Boston. Formerly known as Cape Newagen, and supposed to have been settled as early as 1630. Afterward called Townshend, and incorporated Nov. 3, 1764. In 1842, the name was changed to Boothbay, in memory of Boothbay, England. Population-1850, 2504; 1860, 2857; 1870, 3200; 1880, 3576.
