Eight miles N. W. of Wiscasset. Five miles from Richmond, on Mon. and tri-weekly stage-line. Dresden Mills, only village, is situated at head of navigation on Eastern river, a branch of the Kennebec. Settled about 1750. Together with Alna, Wiscasset and Perkins, it formed the ancient Pownalborough, which was incorporated Feb.13,1760, receiving its name from Gov. Pownal, and was the shire town of Lincoln county for thirty-four years. Incorporated June 25, 1794, taking its name from the German city, whence some of the inhabitants came.
