Maine Centennial June 26 - July 5, 1920 Sprague's Journal of Maine History Vol. 8 December 1920 No. 4 pages 208-209 Maine Centennial June 26 - July 5, 1920 The 100th anniversary of Maine's entrance into the Union was celebrated at Portland, the opening day being Saturday, June 26th. The Historical Day was Sunday, June 27th, when at 3 P. M. official historical exercises were held at the First Parish Church, Congress Street, near Monument Square, Hon. James Phinney Baxter. President of the Maine Historical Society, delivered the historical address. which was like all of his literary efforts, an able, instructive and entertaining document, and one of the most important additions to the history of Maine that have appeared ill this centennial year. Notable guests present included Gov. Carl E. Milliken, his staff, his council, members of the Legislature, judges of the Supreme Court of Maine, and others prominent in the affairs of the State. Each day was marked with observances, parades and entertain- ments appropriate for such an event, entertaining many thousands who attended the week's celebration. Among the features were the Indian Village at Deering Oaks and the fish and game exhibit under the direction of Commissioner Willis E. Parsons at Riverton Park, which were open every day. At the Exposition Building on Park Avenue was an exhibit repre- senting many of the industries of the State.
