Maine Mining Journal Index (by volume number . issue number) Volume 1 = started January 2, 1880, issued weekly. Microfilm and original at Fogler Library, University of Maine, Orono, Maine. Also may be available from American Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Massachusetts. Indexed by issue only, multiple references per issue are common. Most issues consist of 12 letter size pages. Reprinted, non-Maine, articles are not indexed. Indexed by Vandall T. King, PO Box 126, Walworth, NY 14568 (annwb2@aol.com). People (mentions, also business advertisements; article authors separately indexed) (Towns indicated or assumed from newspaper text; some are commercial addresses only, e.g. someone listed from Bangor might come from the Bangor area; absence of town name indicates missing data; all towns are Maine except "Boston" or as indicated.) Most references indicate initials only, entries completed where reasonable additional data are available. Typographical errors in names and initials are not always obvious and are not usually corrected unless due to compelling information. Many people were transient in the mines and may have soon returned to their native town or migrated entirely out of the state depending on circumstances. The Maine metal mining boom lasted several years. First mining of the boom covered by Maine Mining Journal was 1876 in Sullivan and by 1883, the Blue Hill area was nearly the last mining town, but sporadic mining attempts continued in various towns, mostly near the coast.
