Descendants of Sir EVERARD de ROWE Generation No. 1 1. Sir EVERARD1 de ROWE was born in England, and died in England. He married Unknown in England. Notes for Sir EVERARD de ROWE: Beautiful Devonshire in the southwest of England Is the ancestral home of the Rowes. Here at Lamerton near Plymouth the family were long possessed of a considerable estate which was handed down from generation to generation, evidently since the days or Richard the First. It was in the days of the crusades that the founder of the house received as a token of his bravery in the holy wars the arms since borne by his descendants. The name of Nicholas Rowe, a member of this family, is well known to all students of English literature as that of the first biographer of Shakespeare and translator of Lucan's Pharsalia, he was born in Little Barford, Bedfordshire, England,June 30,1674, and was educated at Westminster school, studied law, became a successful courtier and politician. His edition or Shakespeare prefaced by the famous biography was published in 1700 and was followed by various successful dramatic works. In 1714 he was made poet laureate by George the First to succeed Nahum Tate, but died two years later and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Previous to his appointment as laureate in the reign of Queen Anne he served as under secretary of state to the Duke of Queensbury. Nearly a quarter of a century before the birth of Nicholas, however, another member of the family, lured by the promise of the New World and the freedom of worship according to conscience, Left the country of his ancestors and settled on the bleak shores of New England, John Rowe came to Cape Ann in 1651 and established himself on the estate still well known to his descendants, being the first to settle in that part of Gloucester known as the Farms. Here in the wilderness with no neighbors within a radius of two miles even the stout heart of the pioneer near failed him, and such was the loneliness that he is reported as saying that were it not for his wife he would burn his house and run away by the light of it, He remained, however, and became the father of a numerous family whose names will long be remembered in the annals of "Old Cape Ann." His great grandson, the third John Rowe, was an ensign at the assault of Crown Point and served as a lieutenant throughout the French wars, When the country rushed to arms at the sound of the shots at Lexington and Concord, he was placed in command of one of the Gloucester companies and led it at Bunker Hill. Under him at this time served three other Rowes, his sons and nephews, One of these, his son John, served in Washington's army all through the Revolutionary War, and commanded one of the state companies in Shay's Insurrection, When Hull started on his disastrous expedition in the War of 1812 he was offered a high commission in his army, but refused, foreseeing and prophesying, it is said, the unfortunate outcome of the enterprise. Beulah Sanford Osborn France, contributor to "Five Hundred First Families of America," says the Roe family is very ancient and actually takes its name from Rollo. Hrolf the Granger, or Walker) the Viking who conquered Normandy, married a daughter of Charles, King of France and in 911 became the first Duke of Normandy. The "lls" were dropped from Rollo under the softening influence of the French language and "at the time of William the Conqueror, the name became Roo and Roe." Rollo was descended from Scandinavian rulers. Sir EVERARD de ROWE of Roking near Romney in Kent. He was Knighted by King Richard I for bravery During the Third Crusade. The play-going public approved. "Ulysses" (1706)had a successful run at Queen's Theatre, Haymarket. "Royal Convert", based on early British history, was produced in Haymarket. "Jane Shore" was rapped by Pope. It ran for 19 nights at Drury Lane "and long held the stage." "Lady Jane Grey" at the Drury Lane (1715) was his last tragedy. A comedy "The Biter" lasted one night with the author "laughing with great vehememce" at his own wit. "One of Rowe's chief achievements was an edition of Shakespear's works which he published in 1709 (6 vols.). This is reckoned the first attempt to edit Shakespeare in the modern sense. In the prefatory life Rowe embodied a series of traditions which he had commissioned the actor Betteron to collect for him on a visit to Stratford-on-Avon; many of them were in danger of perishing without a record. Rowe displayed much sagacity in the choice and treatment of his biographic materials, and the memoir is consequently of permanent value. He prefixed dramatis personae to each play, divided and numbered acts and scenes on rational principles and marked the entrances and exits of the characters. Spelling, punctuation and grammar he corrected and modernized. (Gentlemen's Mag. & Historical Chronicle Vol. LXXXIV Part 1) p. 360 "Literary Quarrels from Personal Motives" Rowe and Addison. D'Israeli: Johnson says in Life of Rowe on Addison's Observations on Rowe's character, "Rowe had expressed his happiness to Pope, of Addison's promotion; and Pope, who wished to conciliate Addison towards Rowe, mentioned it, adding, that he believed Rowe was sincere. Addison replied that he did not suspect Rowe feigned; but the levity of his heart is such, that he is struck with any new adventure: and it would effect him just in the same manner, as if he heard I was going to be hanged. He married Mary Knutchford in Gloucester, Mass.. Notes for Daniel Rowe: Daniel Rowe was born at Gloucester, Mass., and lived in that part now the town of Rockport, Mass. He appears to be the Daniel Rowe who served in the revolution in the Continental Army for nine months, enlisting 8 Dec. 1779 and credited to the town of Gloucester, the return being dated at Boxford, near which he seems to have lived. He was also in Colonel Michael Jackson's regiment (Eight Essex County). He married Mary Knutchford. She was born at Gloucester (Rockport, Mass.). She was the daughter of Stephen and Mary (Andrews) Knutchford. The family tradition has it that the father of Stephen Knutchford was an English Lord, and that Stephen, the eldest son, was bought a commission in the English navy. He came to America on the admiral's ship, and when the vessel was in Gloucester, was ordered by the admiral to go ashore and forage for vegetables and fruit. Knutchford refused to obey, and by order of the admiral had his shoulder straps cut off and was rowed ashore stern first a signal disgrace in the English navy. It was during the revolution, and at the first house he inquired for the Continental Army, and received his reply from the girl whom he subsequently married. He enlisted and fought to the end of the revolution in the American Army. After the war he returned to Gloucester and cleared a small farm there, married and for many years taught the village school. The story is a charming bit of colonial romance, and doubtless correct in the essentials Children of Daniel Rowe and Mary Knutchford are: + 363 i. John16 Rowe (John15, STEPHEN14, JOHN13, JOHN12, J0HN11, NICHOLAS10, JOHN9, JOHN8, JOHN7, ROBERT6, RICHARD5, ROBERT4, ROBERT3, ROBERT2 de ROWE, Sir EVERARD1) was born 28 August 1737 in Gloucester, Mass., and died Abt. 1800 in Gloucester, Mass.. He married Sarah Pool 04 January 1759 in Gloucester, Mass.. Notes for John Rowe: John Rowe born 28 August 1737. He became a Major in the militia, and died on his farm at Pigeon Hill about 1800. He married Sarah Pool, 4 Jan. 1759. Sarah was born April 1739 and died 13 Nov. 1789. She was the daughter of John (born 1703, died 1767) and Jemima (Elwell) Pool (born 1704), they married 29 Oct. 1725. He married 2nd Elisabeth Adams of Newbury, Mass., 7 April 1791. She was born 1747 and died 1791, no children. He was a sergeant in the company with his father in 1775 and at the commencement of the Revolutionary War, took command of one of the Gloucester companies that fought at Bunker Hill. On 10 June 1776 (Sandy Bay) a large ship appeared off the cape. There seemed to be few men aboard her; of course she could be easily taken. Captain Rowe had some suspicions that the clumsy craft might be a warship in disguise. Against his better judgment , the shrewd captain joined the attacking party. The brig "Yankee Hero" just out of Newburyport, looking for men and arms, sailed into sight. The brig officers must have been quite as glad to welcome the twenty Sandy Bay volunteers who scrambled aboard so fearlessly. Captain Tracy steered for the unknown ship and let a broadside into the disguised British frigate "Milford" with her thirty-six guns. For perhaps an hour the unequal fight was continued. Ammunition was scanty and finally gave out altogether. She struck her colors and surrendered. Only one man was killed in the brig. Captain Tracy was wounded and two others, one of whom died in Halifax prison "of the wound and the small-pox combined". From Halifax the frigate came to New York with her prisoners and put them on a prison-ship then the small-pox attacked them. The sick ones, Captain Rowe, Lieutenant Poll, and many others were sent to a British hospital on Staten Island. When they were well, as they had not been ordered back to the prison-ship, they hired themselves out to man who sold supplies in the British camp. He employed them aboard a small sloop which he used. Of course they got away, sloop and all, to the camp of the American Army on the New Jersey shore. June 12th ------, Capt. Rowe's company left town. This was made up of men at Sandy Bay and the Farms. It contained only six privates who were not fishermen or sailors. More then a third of the recruits were under twenty-one. The youngest was William Low, a lad of fourteen; and the captain's son John Rowe Jr. (No. 347), only sixteen. Both these companies (Warner's also) fought bravely at Bunker Hill. Two of Warner's men were killed and three wounded, three of Rowe's were killed and two wounder. On the day of the battle a detachment from Rowe's Gloucester company carried off some of the entrenching tools. When news came of the (British) landing, Putnam ordered the group, including Rowe, to the extreme end of the rail-fence on the left flank near the Mystic River, were they helped reinforce the rail-fence and construct a breastwork at the river bank with stones and dirt. The two division assault group moved forthwith, one toward the rail-fence under General Howe. The brave defenders witheld their fire until the red-clad troops had advanced well within musket range. Then they let loose a devastating volley, which shattered the line and caused the Redcoats to fall back in confusion. It was the pluck and caring of such men as these that cheered George Washington, as he journeyed north to take command of the army. "... the liberties of our country are safe!" exclaimed Washington. He became a member of the Baptist Church in Yarmouth and served it for many years as deacon, which office he had also held with the New Gloucester church. She was born 1813 and died 1881. Millard Fillmore was the 13th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES (1850-53), succeeding to that office on the death of Zachary Taylor. Fillmore was born in Cayuga County, New York, on Jan. 7, 1800. His parents were poor. and as a child he had little schooling. An apprentice wool carder, he gained his first formal education in 1819, when a slow period at work enabled him to attend New Hope Academy for 6 months. He then purchased a release from his apprenticeship, worked in a law office, and passed the bar examination in 1823. his law practice flourished, first in East Aurora, New York, and then in Buffalo, New York, which in 1830 he made his permanent home. Fillmore began his political career in the mid-1820s, as one of the many young men swept up in the anti-masonic movement of western New York. Elected to the state assembly in 1828, Fillmore successfilly sponsored a bill to end imprisonment for debt. In 1832 he was elected to the U.S. Congress as an Anti-Mason. In Congress, Fillmore joined the Whig Party, the coalition opposed to Andrew Jackson. He served as a Whig congressman from Buffalo from 1837 to 1843 and became a strong advocate of internal improvements and of the protective tariff. A man of solid character and dipomatic temperament, Fillmore won the respect of his colleagues, who in 1840 named him chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. He led passage of the Whig Tariff Act of 1842.During the 1840s, Fillmore became identified with the conservative wing of the Whig Party in New York. The liberal faction, led by Thurlow Weed and William H. Seward, was sympathetic to the growing antislavery movement. Seward and weed also sought to attract to the Whigs voters from the great numbers of immigrants who flooded into New York after 1842. Fillmore, although against slavery, opposed the abolitionists as disruptive of the Whig Party and of the nation itself. He was similarly skeptical about the quick naturalization of foreigners, who voted in droves for the Democratic party. As the Whig nominee for governor of New York in 1844, Fillmore attributed his narrow defeat to the hostile votes of abolitionists and Irish Roman Catholics. He returned (1847) to office when elected comptroller of the state of New York. In 1848 the Whigs chose an outsider, Gen. ZacharyTaylor,a Louisiana slaveholder who had never voted and was not a Whig,as their presidential candidate. To reconcile the more traditional elements of the party, the convention named Fillmore as the Whig vice-presidential candidate. Despite rising animosity over the question of the expansion of slavery into territories won in the Mexican wars, the narrow victory of Taylor and Fillmore held out hope of a conciliatory national solution to the problem. The hope proved false. Taylor was fiercely resistant to the proposals that emerged in 1850 to resolve the dispute over slavery, although the measures had the strong support of Whig founders Henry Clay and Daniel Webster. At the height of the sectional crisis Taylor died unexpectedly, and on July 9, 1850, Fillmore became president. Dramatically and decisively, the new president committed himself to sectional compromise. Accepting the resignations of Taylor's cabinet, he appointed Daniel Webster, the Northern advocate of compromise, as his secretary of state, and also named Whigs favorable to compromise to the other cabinet posts. As fast as Congress could approve the bills making up the Compromise of 1850, Fillmore signed them into law. His adminstration strictly enforced the most controversial of the new measures, the Fugitive Slave Law, which required Northerners to collaborate in the return of escaped slaves to their Southern owners. During the remainder of his term, Fillmore became the first president to approve federal aid for the building of railroads and the first to send a trade mission (led by Commodore Matthew C. Perry) to Japan. Because fo his enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Law, Fillmore was the favorite of Southern delegates to the Whig presidential convention of 1852. His antagonists were Northern Whigs, led by his old New York rivals Seward and Weed, who favored the choice of an antislavery presidential candidate. The Southerners achieved a pro-Compromise party platform, but after 53 ballots, the Northerners succeeded in pushing through an antislavery nominee, Gen. Winfield Scott. The divided Whigs were defeated by Democrat Franklin Pierce in the election, and the Whig party thereafter began to disintegrate. Fillmore returned to Buffalo but remained active in politics and again sought the presidency in 1856. He profited from the rising nativist movement, which opposed the deepening influence of Catholic immigrants in U.S. life and politics. The Know-Nothing Party, founded on nativism, named Fillmore its presidential nominee in 1856. He also won the nomination of the remnant of the Whig party, now dominated by Southerners. Pitted against both Democrats and Republicans, Fillmore carried only Maryland in the election but won over 40 percent of the vote in ten other Southern states. Fillmore supported the Union during the Civil War but felt that the conflict was needless. He was critical of President Abraham Lincoln's administration and supported Democrat George B. McClellan in the presidential contest of 1864. After retiring from politics, he became active in the civic life of Buffalo, and died there at age 74 on March 8, 1874. He married Mina Williams in Gloucester, Mass.. Children of Oscar Anderson and Mina Williams are: 514 i. Fletcher21 Anderson, died in Lynn, Mass.. Notes for Fletcher Anderson: Fletcher Anderson was in the aerial service during World War I. He lived at 10 Clinton Street, Lynn, Mass. at the time of his untimely death. The following is a newspaper account of his death. Edward S. Foster Jr. son of Edward S. Foster of 15 Grove Street, Winchester, and a nephew of the late ex-Mayor Harry C. Foster of Gloucester, was almost instantly killed yesterday fore noon at 11:15 o'clock, when an airplane in which he was flying with Fletcher Anderson over the Lynn Marshes, crashed 1000 feet to the ground at the foot of Temple Street, near the Lynn line. Young Foster, only 20 years of age died on the way to the Chelsea Memorial Hospital. Anderson was dead when he was taken from the wreckage a few minutes after the accident. The accident was witnessed by several persons among them Wellington Snell of 106 Lynnway, Point of Pines, Treasurer of the Lynn Aerial Transport Company, also known as the Barney Johnson Airplane Company, builders of the machine. Mr. Snell said that the plane made a long sweeping turn and then, failing to recover, plunged headlong to the ground. He suggested that a possible cause of the tragedy might have been a shortage of gasoline, as little was found in the tanks, but from an inspection it appeared that the right wing probably collapsed when the pilot was making a banked turn. Leaving the aviation field at Saugus at 10:45, the monoplane circled about over the marshes and along Revere Beach for several minutes. Persons watching the flight observed nothing unusual , and even commented on the ease and certainty with the plane was being maneuvered. Suddenly it began a long gradual turn which developed into a glide. The velocity of the glide increased, and a second later the plane fell toward the marsh, making a complete revolution before it crashed. Foster, the only son of Edward S. Foster, formerly of Magnolia, had just purchased the machine, and was taking Anderson along as a passenger. He had been greatly interested in flying for some time, but was comparatively unfamiliar with the monoplane, which had never been tested by a licensed pilot. Anderson who was educated in Lynn, had been a member of the air service during the war and was some thing of an expert. There was much criticism by experienced aviators, who examined the wrecked plane, of the fact that the two men had been permitted to use the machine, which was built by Barney Johnson from parts taken from a number of planes, according to his own design. Flying in the same plane at Wrentham last week, Johnson himself narrowly escaped death when engine trouble developed, his landing gear struck the roof of a house and he nearly crashed. 515 ii. He married MINNIE L. EHLER 12 April 1899 in Gloucester, Mass.. Notes for WALTER ELLSWORTH ANDERSON: WALTER ELLSWORTH ANDERSON was born at Gloucester, Mass. 4 Aug. 1875 and died 1978 at Rockport, Mass. at the age of 103 years old. He married MINNIE L. EHLER 12 April 1899 at Gloucester, Mass. She was born 27 Dec. 1875 and died 1967. He was a sailmaker for many years. He worked for E. L. Rowe & Son, Cunningham and Thompson, Fore River Shipbuilding at Quincy, Mass. and the U. S. Navy Shipyard at Bristol, R. I. He worked on the sails of the seven masted schooner, Thomas W. Lawson the only seven masted schooner ever built. He worked 25 years making sails for the Gorton Corp. at Gloucester, Mass. and later went to work on the Gorton Corp. wharves after retiring from sailmaking at age 75. He belonged to the Gorton Corp. 30 year club. The following is a newspaper article of WALTER ANDERSON'S 100th birthday. He still drinks wine, has a package of Tiparillo Little Cigars protruding from his pocket which his great-grandson claims he "smokes like a fiend", still follows the Red Sox ups and downs on the radio and, keeps track of all his great and great-great-grandchildren. Walter E. Anderson celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday at the Den-Mar Nursing Home (Rockport, Mass) amidist a throng of well-wishers that included several members of the Board of Selectmen and some of Anderson's relatives. Other family members had thrown a pre-birthday party for him Sunday. "There was the whole gang of them here then", said Anderson, adding he has received "a bushel of cards that'll take me weeks to read". Anderson has been at the Den-Mar a total of about two and half years, having stayed from 1964 to 1966 and returning several months ago. Although he claimed he felt "all muzzled up" by the sheer numbers of the Den-Mar residents, staff and outsiders that showed up at 2pm. to help him usher in his 100th. year, he was still sprightly enough to present Den-Mar nurse Jan Brooks with a bear hug and whirl Nurse's Aide Donna Belknap around the dance floor for a minute or two to the saxophone rendition of "Lover Come Back To Me" played by William Rich of Gloucester. He remarked this morning to a Den-Mar staffer he was kissed so many times yesterday his cheeks are "worn out". Anderson's one regret was that nobody had cooked him up a platter of steamed clams, but said a Den-Mar kitchen helper currently on vacation promised she would make him some as soon as she returned. Never mind the Red Tide. because Anderson doesn't believe a word of it "It's a big bluff", he said. "I've eaten them for 75 years and they never said anything about that". Letters presented to him at yesterday's celebration came from Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, State Rep. Richard R. Silva and the Red Sox. He received a letter from President Ford. It was the Red Sox letter he kept talking about and pulling out from his inside breast pocket yesterday, however. Seated in a window chair by the birthday cake table. Anderson refused an ice cream sundae because he said he was "afraid to get fat" and jokingly grumbled that the fruit punch was "no good" because it didn't have a "swig" in it. The nursing home had placed two yellow birthday candles on the cake table and an enormous yellow bow on the cake knife because, as one staff member said, "Yellow turns him on". As he blew out the yellow candles with one puff each, he shrugged off congratulatory cries from an estimated 100 onlookers. It's the next hundred years that will be the real test, he said. The following is a newspaper account of Walter Anderson's 101st. birthday. If there is a case for quitting smoking, refusing alcohol or stemming the flow of junk food to preserve one's health, Walter Anderson turned it inside out yesterday. Anderson, who celebrated his 101st. amidst a throng of nursing home patients, staff and relatives, was somewhat weaker then last year's birthday when he took to the dance floor for a couple of fox trots. But, he cracked a wide smile when a couple boxes of Oreos cookies, a can of pipe tobacco and a bottle of Beefeater's gin were opened for him. "It's what he wanted", one of the nurses smiled. "He likes smokes and stuff like that", his daughter, Mildred Olson confided. "To another 100, Walter", Carolyn O'Connor, the home's activities director said, raising her glass. Anderson, a former Gloucester resident, just smiled. That's what they said last year and he came one step closer yesterday. Children of WALTER ANDERSON and MINNIE EHLER are: + 521 i.
