DIRECTIONS TO THE SMALL  CEMETERIES 
of BUCKFIELD, MAINE 

ANDREWS, BERRY/RICKER, CHAFFIN, CHURCHILL, CROCKER, DECOSTER, DREW, EAST BUCKFIELD, HAMMOND, KEENE/SHAW,  LOTHROP, LOWELL, MAXIM/HATHAWAY, PACKARD, PAINE, PRINCE, SWAN, TURNER, and WHITMAN.

A map can be seen at the Buckfield Town Office, phone 207-336-2521. As often as possible, the directions are given from the center of Buckfield.
Most of the cemeteries are marked with white cemetery markers.

CHAFFIN Cemetery: From the center of Buckfield, travel up High Street 0.4 miles,  bear right onto a paved road. Travel on this road towards Sumner for 1.5 miles. The cemetery is on the right hand side of the road, on the Buckfield-Sumner town line.

CROCKER Cemetery: From the bridge in the center of Buckfield travel up High Street 0.4 miles, bear right onto the paved road and continue 0.1 mile. The cemetery is located on the left in what was the Brigham Cemetery.

PRINCE Yard: From the bridge in the center of Buckfield, travel up High Street, 1.4 miles toward North Buckfield. Turn left and travel 2.1 miles. The cemetery is on the right hand side of the road.

LOWELL Yard: From the center of Buckfield, travel 2.5 miles on Highway 117 toward Turner. Turn right onto Highway 124 and go 1 mile. The cemetery is located on the left.

BERRY/RICKER Cemetery: From the bridge in the center of Buckfield, travel 1 mile north on Highway 140. Turn right onto Jordan Road. Continue up Jordan Road for 1 mile, passing the intersection with Gesner Road. The cemetery is located along the stone wall separating the two houses on the right. Follow the stone wall 350 feet to the cemetery. Check at the town office for the name of the landowner to obtain permission before walking through the pasture to the cemetery. 

EAST BUCKFIELD Yard: From the center of Buckfield travel south on Highway 117. Immediately after the bridge bear left onto East Buckfield Road. Travel 1.2 miles. The cemetery is on the right hand side of this road.

DECOSTER Cemetery: Follow the directions to the EAST BUCKFIELD Yard. Continue 0.5 miles. The cemetery is on the right.

DREW Cemetery: Follow the directions to the DECOSTER Cemetery. Continue 0.1 mile more and bear right. Drive 0.8 miles. The DREW Cemetery is located on the right hand side of the road.

KEENE/SHAW Cemetery: Follow the directions to the EAST BUCKFIELD Cemetery. Continue along this road until you reach the first left hand turn (Gammon Road). Drive to the end of Gammon Road. The KEENE-SHAW Cemetery is located 0.4 miles up the dirt lane on the right hand side.

TURNER Cemetery: From the bridge in the center of Buckfield, travel on Highway 117 toward South Paris for 2.1 miles. Turn left. Continue for 0.4 miles to TURNER Cemetery. It is located on the left hand side of this road.

MAXIM/HATHAWAY Cemetery: From the bridge in the center of Buckfield, travel on Highway 117 toward South Paris for 3.9 miles. Turn right on the Whitman School Road. Travel 0.4 miles. The MAXIM/HATHAWAY Cemetery is located on the right. Directly opposite, up a steep bank and 200 feet into the woods is the THAYER Monument.


The following cemeteries are not easily accessible by car:

CHURCHILL, PAINE, ANDREWS, and SWAN CEMETERIES
From the center of town travel 3.9 miles on Highway 117 towards South Paris until you reach Whitman School Road. Turn left and travel 0.9 miles. (You will need to ask permission if you wish to drive beyond the metal gate.) Turn left, travel 1000 feet to the CHURCHILL Cemetery on the right.  Continue along the road 200 feet, turn right and go 2500 feet to the PAINE Cemetery. It is located on the left hand side of the road. Continue past the PAINE Cemetery for another 2000 feet to the ANDREWS Cemetery, located up the bank on the left hand side of the road. The house was located across the road.

SWAN Cemetery: From the center of town travel 3.9 miles on Highway 117 towards South Paris until you reach Whitman School Road. Turn left and travel 0.9 miles. (You will need to ask permission if you wish to drive beyond the metal gate.) Bear right and continue for about 2400 feet. The cemetery is located on the left hand side of the road. Follow the stone wall at the edge of the field for 500 feet. The graves are on the right side of the wall.

PACKARD, LOTHROP, WHITMAN CEMETERIES
These cemeteries can be found by traveling 1 mile from the center of Buckfield on Highway 117 toward South Paris. Turn left onto Sodom Road. Travel on Sodom road 1.35 miles. The PACKARD Cemetery is located on the left hand side of the road. Continue past the PACKARD Cemetery for 1.85 miles. The LOTHROP Cemetery is located on the left. Continue another 2.1 miles and turn left on a dirt road. Go 700 feet along this road, turn left and walk 400 feet to the WHITMAN Cemetery.

HAMMOND Cemetery: From the bridge in the center of Buckfield, travel on High Street to North Buckfield. At the bridge in North Buckfield, travel 0.8 miles east, bear right and continue for 1.1 miles. Turn left onto a discontinued dirt road. Continue on this road for 0.45 miles, turn right and go up a logging road for 800 feet. Watch for the cemetery sign on the left and walk in 100 feet. There is a stone wall around the cemetery with a little opening on the south side of the wall.
